- Meeting Overview:
During the recent Lonsdale City Council meeting, attention was given to honoring the long-serving leaders of the city, as they stepped down after over a decade of service. Outgoing Mayor Tim Rud and Council members Kevin Kodada and Cindy Furrer were recognized with plaques for their contributions to the community since taking office in the early 2000s. Their tenure was marked by numerous community improvements, including city infrastructure enhancements, economic development, and the establishment of various public amenities, as highlighted by the staff member presenting the awards.
The leaders’ achievements were reflected upon with gratitude by their peers. They managed challenges such as litigation and implemented substantial community projects. Notable accomplishments included the establishment of the Villages of Lonsdale, remodeling of City Hall, and public safety equipment upgrades. The leadership was also instrumental in infrastructure projects, including the construction of new water treatment facilities and road improvements.
A celebratory atmosphere permeated the meeting as the outgoing officials were presented with gold watches amidst humorous exchanges and playful banter, which added a jovial touch to the proceedings. Group photos were taken, capturing the camaraderie among the council members.
In addition to the recognition of departing leaders, the meeting addressed community developments and improvements. A particular focus was on the removal of a lift station on the south side of Highway 19 at 8th Avenue, with a staff recommendation to run gravity to the main lift station. This was part of ongoing sewer improvements to address underlying issues like cracks and sags in pipes, which are important for maintaining the city’s infrastructure.
The council also reflected on the evolution of the city’s park system. Since 2004, the city has expanded from having just two parks to a more extensive network that includes Baser Park, Reac Nature Preserve, and the addition of amenities like an archery range, playgrounds, and a disc golf course. Community involvement was illustrated by a $5,000 donation for fencing at the dog park. The park developments cater to diverse recreational needs, from soccer fields at Trka Park to a skate park at Shka Park.
Lonsdale’s remarkable population growth, from approximately 2,000 in 2004 to around 5,000 currently, was acknowledged. This growth ranked the city as the 11th fastest-growing in the state between 2000 and 2010. The council highlighted the emergence of new businesses like Dollar General and local car washes, contributing to the town’s economic landscape.
Grants totaling nearly $3.7 million since 2004 have facilitated various projects, including the development of a business park and improvements to water quality. The establishment of the Lonsdale Community Foundation, operating separately from the city to support local nonprofits, was initiated through community conversations.
Further discussions included the transformation of the Veterans Memorial from a neglected building to a community focal point, overcoming initial community reluctance, and the importance of public-private partnerships. Efforts to extend utilities for the new elementary school and recruit the Lonsdale Clinic were noted as challenging yet successful collaborations.
The meeting also included routine approvals such as cigarette licenses for local businesses, with a minimal annual fee. Concerns were raised about Lonzo Food and Fuel due to past revenue department issues, but no current violations were preventing their license approval.
Infrastructure projects were addressed, with updates on a 2025 million overlay project and forthcoming bids. The council expressed appreciation for contributions from the consulting firm WSB in these endeavors.
Additional community activities, such as library events and the introduction of board game nights, received positive feedback. The parks and planning zoning report included updates to the comprehensive plan and preparations for a public hearing on off-road parking.
Concluding the meeting, an Economic Development Authority (EDA) report highlighted progress on a small cities development grant, encouraging applicants to seek assistance from City Hall. The effectiveness of social media marketing was reiterated, underscoring its role in community engagement.
