- Meeting Overview:
In a recent meeting of the Oviedo Public Arts Board, members discussed topics including the creation of a watercolor portrait and a bronze plaque to honor a prominent local figure known as Jolie, the progress of a watercolor map project, the initiation of an art program involving city staff, and the celebration of the city’s centennial with a transformative art project.
The board decided to commission a watercolor portrait and a bronze plaque in honor of Jolie, a figure of local significance, to be displayed at the city’s golf course. The proposed budget for the portrait was set at a maximum of $5,000, described by one member as a “killer deal” for the artist’s work. The project aims to commemorate Jolie’s contributions and was suggested to include a plaque that could serve an educational purpose. The plan also involves reaching out to Jolie’s stepdaughter, who oversees his foundation, for potential contributions, and organizing a dedication ceremony or golf tournament in support of the foundation. This proposal, along with the “Wings of Joy” project, is scheduled for presentation to the city council and the Community Redevelopment Agency (CRA) for approval.
The watercolor map project was also a point of focus. The board discussed the inclusion of local landmarks and elements such as a mean goose at a lake, a golf ball and club, blue herons, a fire truck, and a local fire station. Suggestions were made to distribute the map as postcards and posters for fundraising. The enhanced color quality of the map and the intention to display it at City Hall and on the website were also acknowledged.
In addition to these projects, the board deliberated on starting an art program with city staff, considering a quarterly schedule while weighing potential costs and administrative efforts. The emphasis was on partnering with legally registered organizations or individuals and involving local schools and community groups.
The upcoming 100th anniversary of the city prompted a debate about transforming a park structure into a piece of art. The board discussed securing funding, with one member referring to a past grant opportunity. The impact of the anniversary art project and the need to find additional funding sources were also considered, with a suggestion to gather more information and invite artists to contribute ideas.
Discussions about securing grants for public art projects highlighted the challenges of finding funding and meeting time constraints. The rewriting of the Land Development code was identified as a priority. The board contemplated forming a committee for the city’s centennial celebration and exploring event options, including potential instrument installations and public performances, with possible outreach to Opera Orlando, Seminole State, and UCF.
The board sought clarity on the limitations regarding socializing and discussing board matters outside official meetings, including on social media. The possibility of remote attendance at meetings was also examined, focusing on restrictions and necessary considerations. The scheduling of the next meeting was set, concluding with a motion to adjourn.
