Palatka Community Advocates for Speed Tables Despite Traffic Study Findings
- Meeting Overview:
In a recent Palatka City Commission meeting, the primary focus was on the community’s request for speed tables in the Viking Manor area. Despite a police department traffic study indicating minimal speeding, residents showed a strong preference for speed control measures, emphasizing safety concerns. In addition, the meeting addressed updates from the fire department, various city projects, and annexation proposals, reflecting ongoing community development and safety initiatives.
The discussion on speed tables arose from community concerns about speeding on Viking Street, where complaints had been lodged about vehicles traveling at excessive speeds. A thorough 23-day traffic study conducted by the police department revealed that most vehicles were within the speed limit, and only a few infractions were noted. However, the community’s call for speed tables was strong, with 87.5% of residents expressing their desire for traffic calming measures during a neighborhood outreach effort. The police department proposed alternative measures such as new signage and enhanced enforcement, but the commissioners leaned towards respecting the community’s wishes.
Commissioners discussed the cost and feasibility of installing speed tables, estimated between $300 and $500 each, and underscored the importance of community input in decision-making. One commissioner remarked on the necessity of considering residents’ perspectives, stating that the community’s lived experience should guide decisions about their streets. The commission plans to revisit the decision once cost estimates are finalized.
The meeting also highlighted developments within the fire department, which secured an 82% funding increase from Georgia Pacific for equipment and training enhancements. The department announced its participation in the Ancient City Fire Expo, which would draw regional and out-of-state firefighters for training. Deputy Chief Brford’s recent certification as a Florida certified fire investigator was noted as a significant advancement, enabling the department to conduct independent investigations and improve fire prevention strategies.
Further, the fire department reported progress on infrastructure improvements, such as the renovation of the burn building and the installation of hurricane-rated bay doors and windows funded by the HMGP grant. The department also engaged in community outreach through initiatives like the upcoming car seat installation event and offered smoke detectors to residents during fire prevention month.
The River Street retaining wall project, the Chobach Park Improvement, and the Oak Street reconstruction were among the highlighted projects, each aimed at enhancing safety and accessibility. The Jenkins rehab project, funded by a $690,000 grant, is set to improve the historic middle school’s structural stability and accessibility, with completion expected by December.
Annexation proposals were also addressed, with the commission approving the zoning of parcels intended for redevelopment, including a future fast-food restaurant site and an industrial property seeking city water services. These annexations aimed to facilitate development and infrastructure access, supporting Palatka’s growth.
Lastly, the first reading of the “Palatka Sexual Offender and Sexual Predator Act” was introduced, with the intent to align local regulations with those of neighboring counties. This ordinance addresses community safety concerns, particularly in areas with higher concentrations of sexual offenders.
