- Meeting Overview:
The recent Palisades Park Borough School Board meeting was dominated by discussions over ongoing contract negotiations with the Palisades Park Association (PPA), revealing significant tensions between the board and the faculty. The meeting also addressed student performance metrics, community engagement, and upcoming events.
One notable issue was the protracted contract negotiations between the board and the PPA, which represents the district’s educators. A representative from the PPA voiced concerns during the public comment section, criticizing the board’s recent proposal that included a 3.1% salary increase but required faculty to contribute to their vision and dental coverage. This proposal was deemed less favorable compared to previous offers and below county averages, according to the PPA. The board’s counterproposal was met with dissatisfaction from the PPA, which claimed that the board’s priorities seemed misaligned, spending over $43,000 on legal fees instead of investing directly in educational staff and resources.
A board member responded by emphasizing the challenges of negotiating within budgetary constraints and the broader obligations to the community. The board member expressed frustration over the PPA’s approach to negotiations, particularly highlighting a breakdown in communication and adherence to ground rules, which the PPA reportedly decided no longer applied. The board member also described the difficulties faced due to an outdated contract needing extensive revisions, stressing the need for patience and understanding from the public regarding the complexities of the negotiation process.
Teachers and parents also spoke during the public comment period, sharing their perspectives on the negotiations. A teacher from Lindberg School highlighted the difficulty in retaining staff due to competitive salaries in neighboring districts, calling the board’s approach “out of touch” with regional realities. Another teacher from the Early Childhood Center underscored the dedication of educators who continued to prioritize student needs despite the challenging negotiation environment.
Parents expressed their gratitude to teachers for their commitment but voiced frustration over the lack of transparency and communication from the board. One parent emphasized the anxiety and uncertainty caused by the negotiations, urging the board to prioritize resolving the issues to prevent negative impacts on students’ education.
The PPA president called for the board to recognize the long-standing dedication of the district’s staff by ensuring fair and equitable treatment in the negotiations. A teacher from the high school criticized the board’s negotiation tactics, expressing concern that the district was gaining a negative reputation in Bergen County due to its handling of the contract discussions.
Aside from contract negotiations, the board addressed several other topics. Student performance metrics were a focal point, with discussions on mathematics and Advanced Placement (AP) assessments. AP scores showed an upward trend, with more students achieving scores of three or better, attributed partly to the board’s initiative to reimburse students for successful scores.
The board also reviewed the district’s HIV self-assessment submission to the New Jersey Department of Education, which revealed improvements in anti-bullying initiatives. Palisades Park Junior Senior High School’s score increased from 68 to 70 out of 78, reflecting progress in addressing bullying.
Furthermore, the board discussed upcoming events such as a skit night and movie night and addressed logistical concerns about the use of facilities for indoor soccer practices. A decision was made to approve the soccer practice for one month to better assess local student participation before committing long-term.
Personnel matters also featured prominently, with a focus on supporting ESL students through after-school programs designed to help them catch up academically. The board expressed gratitude to teachers for extending their work hours to support these initiatives, emphasizing the importance of addressing educational gaps.
