Parents Urge Ayer-Shirley School Committee to Act on Diversity and Equity Concerns
- Meeting Overview:
The Ayer-Shirley Regional School Committee meeting was marked by passionate appeals from parents urging the establishment of a functional diversity and equity subcommittee.
Laura Warner, a parent and educator, addressed the committee, underscoring the need for the diversity and equity subcommittee, which had not yet convened despite prior discussions. She presented a petition with about 150 signatures, advocating for action. Warner shared a student’s perspective on the inadequacy of Black history education, quoting, “I feel ashamed when things are brought up that I should have learned in school.” This sentiment resonated with others in attendance, stressing a predominantly white narrative in the curriculum. Warner’s comments were met with acknowledgment from a committee member, who clarified that responses to her communications were intended to come from the chair on behalf of the entire committee.
Sherice Murphy, another parent, echoed Warner’s concerns, highlighting incidents of racism her daughter faced and criticizing the committee’s perceived inaction. She questioned the reactive nature of the committee, asking why the murder of George Floyd was needed to catalyze recognition of systemic issues. Murphy’s statement, “no one from the school committee responded to my email,” pointed to a communication gap, stressing the need for urgent action to protect students of color.
The dialogue extended to exploring the feasibility of forming the diversity and equity subcommittee, with discussions on leveraging resources such as webinars on unconscious bias. Suggestions to hold virtual meetings to ensure continuity were made, emphasizing that the subcommittee’s work should not be delayed.
As the meeting progressed, the focus shifted to the broader challenges of remote learning, driven by feedback from recent surveys. Parents and teachers had provided insights into the district’s remote learning experiences, identifying both effective practices and areas needing improvement. Approximately 78% of parents felt supported by the district during remote learning, though challenges like inconsistent Zoom meeting schedules and workload management were highlighted. The need for a robust remote learning plan was emphasized, incorporating parent and student feedback to enhance the educational experience in anticipation of potential future disruptions.
In addition to these concerns, the meeting touched on the school counseling program’s advancements. A presentation outlined the Massachusetts Model 3.0 framework for comprehensive school counseling. The framework’s four components—definition, assessment, management, and delivery—were detailed, focusing on aligning counseling standards with academic ones to enhance student support.
Another subject of discussion was the district’s recycling policy. Lori Sable from the Ayer Recycling Committee presented revised strategies to ensure compliance with grant requirements and promote sustainable practices in schools. The committee engaged in discussions about the role of custodians and students in managing recycling efforts, with suggestions to establish a recycling club for enhanced engagement.
Towards the end of the meeting, a resolution was presented addressing the financial strains posed by unfunded COVID-19 mandates on schools. The resolution, directed at state officials, called for guaranteed funding to implement safety measures like social distancing and PPE. Despite some concerns about the resolution’s bold wording, the committee unanimously decided to proceed with its dissemination to emphasize the need for state support.
