Parker Gains New Internet Provider as Clear Wave Fiber Plans Extensive Underground Network
- Meeting Overview:
The Parker City Council meeting featured a significant presentation from representatives of Clear Wave Fiber, outlining plans to install an expansive underground fiber optic network throughout the city. The network promises enhanced internet speeds and reliability, with construction expected to begin soon after permit approval.
At the forefront of the meeting was a detailed presentation by Eric Ryan, the outside plant construction manager for Clear Wave Fiber. Ryan introduced the company’s plan to lay approximately 70,000 feet of underground fiber optic cable, starting at the north end of Parker off Cherry Street. Unlike existing providers such as Xfinity, which primarily rely on copper or aerial installations, Clear Wave Fiber’s network will consist entirely of fiber optics, offering symmetrical internet speeds that ensure equal upload and download rates. Ryan highlighted the competitive pricing, estimating monthly fees between $60 and $70, less than the $200 reported for Xfinity’s basic package.
The council engaged in a thorough discussion about the advantages and potential risks of the new infrastructure. Concerns were raised about service disruptions, particularly if a connection were accidentally severed by a neighbor. Ryan assured the council that while such incidents would affect service, the company’s emergency protocols would typically resolve issues within 24 to 48 hours. He also explained the installation process, detailing how connections from the main lines to homes would be established through servicing terminals, with cables buried between 24 and 36 inches deep.
The durability of the underground system was another focal point. Ryan, drawing on his experience in various states, emphasized that underground installations usually withstand severe weather conditions better than aerial systems. This resilience is particularly relevant in Parker, where storms have previously caused significant service interruptions. Ryan reassured residents of the system’s durability, especially if homes are equipped with backup generators.
Further inquiries addressed potential conflicts with existing underground utilities. A representative from Clear Wave assured the council that their infrastructure would not impede future installations by Florida Power and Light. They emphasized their commitment to being treated equally regarding right-of-way occupancy.
The discussion also covered Clear Wave’s customer service strategies, including efforts to keep residents informed about construction timelines. The company plans to distribute door hangers to notify residents ahead of construction activities. Equipment-wise, Clear Wave will provide routers and necessary customer premise equipment, though residents can opt to use personal routers if they wish.
Clear Wave Fiber’s expansion into Parker coincides with the company’s broader growth plans, having recently merged with Point Broadband to extend its reach from four to twelve states. Representatives expressed enthusiasm about the project and reiterated their commitment to community engagement and transparent communication.
The council unanimously approved the motion to welcome Clear Wave Fiber into Parker, a decision anticipated to bring the community improved internet service options. The company is prepared to submit permits and anticipates construction could begin within 30 to 45 days following approval.
