Pasack Valley School Board Discusses Professional Development, Testing, and Facility Improvements
- Meeting Overview:
In a recent meeting of the Pasack Valley Regional High School District Board of Education, discussions centered on professional development initiatives, the impact of standardized testing on instructional time, and ongoing facility improvements, including updates to the school’s HVAC system and auditorium.
A major focus of the meeting was the district’s professional development program, presented by Dr. Mark Rouso. The district has established 26 PLCs, enabling educators to collaborate on various instructional strategies and subjects. Dr. Rouso emphasized the importance of these communities in addressing the diverse needs of students, including those with disabilities and mental health challenges.
The professional development plan, approved in August, aims to bolster faculty capacity, tailor instruction for diverse learners, and cultivate a supportive school culture. A significant component of this initiative is the integration of new educational standards and technology into the curriculum. The district is vetting websites for educational appropriateness and responsibly incorporating artificial intelligence into classroom activities. Additionally, they are piloting virtual and augmented reality devices to enhance learning experiences.
The meeting also addressed concerns related to the impact of standardized assessments on instructional time. The New Jersey Graduation Proficiency Assessment (NJ GPA) and the New Jersey Student Learning Assessment (NJSLA) were specifically mentioned as significant disruptors of the school calendar, with 16 days reserved for testing. Board members expressed interest in balancing testing with instructional time, a topic that remains under consideration as the district reviews its academic calendar.
Facility improvements were another highlight of the meeting. The ongoing HVAC project at the Valley’s cafeteria has made notable progress, with heating now operational. The auditorium has seen the completion of flooring, and electrical work is approaching completion, paving the way for further stage enhancements.
The board also discussed the scheduling of midterm and final exams, which will occur in two-hour blocks to facilitate focused study sessions. During these periods, teachers will be available for additional support, although student attendance is optional. The transition to block scheduling aims to foster collaboration among educators through PLCs, despite the increasing demands of state requirements.
In the realm of policy and athletics, a proposal was made to create a head coaching position for girls’ wrestling. The discussion also touched on the potential for expanding girls’ flag football, either through a combined program or standalone support. These suggestions highlight the community’s interest in enhancing opportunities for female athletes.
Financial matters were briefly addressed, with 16 consent agenda items introduced without debate. The board is reviewing applications for a new superintendent, following the recent application deadline. Meanwhile, fundraising efforts by the National Honor Society and other student clubs were recognized, including a Thanksgiving food drive aimed at supporting 12 families in need.
Public comments during the meeting included a student’s appeal for support of the theater program, currently facing logistical challenges due to ongoing renovations in the auditorium. The student invited board members to attend an upcoming production, signaling the community’s continued support for the arts.
