Passaic County Board Celebrates Irish-American Heritage and Approves $47 Million for Traffic Improvements
- Meeting Overview:
The Passaic County Board of Commissioners held a meeting that celebrated Irish-American heritage through proclamations honoring community leaders and organizations, and approved a $47 million funding for traffic improvements in the area near Willowbrook Mall.
A key highlight of the meeting was the celebration of Irish-American Heritage Month, where individuals and organizations were honored for their contributions to the community. The meeting took on a festive tone as various proclamations were presented. Commissioner Lazara was appointed as the master of ceremonies for the event, which included an invocation by Father Ryan. He emphasized the contributions of the Sisters of Charity and the challenges faced by Irish immigrants, calling for dignity and care in the treatment of contemporary immigrants.
Patrick Glover, a union leader, was among the honorees. He was recognized for his contributions to the labor movement and his community. Glover, who serves as vice president of the New York and New Jersey Telephone and Communications Emerald Society, expressed his gratitude for the honor. It is a commitment to fairness, solidarity, and the belief that no one stands alone.” Glover reflected on his grandparents’ immigrant journey, emphasizing the importance of hard work and community values.
Another prominent figure honored was John McIntyre, president of the Patterson Education Association. His accomplishments include negotiating labor contracts and advocating for public employees’ rights. He was named the 2026 Irish Man of the Year. McIntyre, who traces his Irish ancestry to County Clare and County Cavan, expressed his appreciation to the commissioners and highlighted the importance of Irish heritage. He shared a personal story about his grandfather, reflecting on family values and the significance of his heritage.
The Sisters of Charity of St. Elizabeth also received a proclamation, recognizing their role in the community since establishing St. Joseph’s Hospital in Patterson in 1867. A representative expressed gratitude for the acknowledgment and underscored the Irish roots that influenced their mission of service and care. Their enduring impact on education and healthcare was highlighted, and they were named the 2026 Irish Women of the Year.
In addition to these celebrations, a development regarding infrastructure was discussed. Commissioner Bartlett reported that the North Jersey Transportation Planning Authority had approved an additional $47 million in funding for the Route 40, Route 46, Route 80, and Route 23 interchange near Willowbrook Mall. This project, which has been in design for 30 years, aims to improve traffic flow and access to the mall. Construction is expected to start later this year and conclude around 2031.
Following these highlights, the meeting proceeded with the usual agenda items. A consent agenda was reviewed, with a resolution removed for separate discussion. Discussions included bond ordinances concerning public improvements and equipment purchases for Passaic County Community College. The first bond ordinance, 2026-03, involved a total appropriation of $6,025,140 for various public improvements, while the second ordinance, 2026-04, authorized the acquisition of new equipment totaling $2,571,180. Both ordinances received favorable votes.
