Passaic County Board Faces Criticism Over Social Services and Celebrates Italian Heritage
- Meeting Overview:
During a recent meeting of the Passaic County Board of Commissioners, concerns over the county’s social services system were raised, alongside celebrations of Italian-American contributions. Public comments highlighted systemic issues within social services, with advocates calling for greater transparency and accountability. Meanwhile, the board also honored notable Italian-American figures.
The meeting reached a critical point during the public comments section, where Martha Martinez, an advocate from Patterson, addressed the board with concerns regarding the county’s social services. Martinez, who has been involved in administering re-entry services since 2009, spoke about systemic failures, particularly highlighting the county’s demand for private business documents from advocates before releasing client-authorized information. This practice, she argued, was arbitrary and violated client rights. Martinez cited a case where a client faced eviction due to the county’s failure to pay two months of rent, despite certification for assistance. She emphasized that these were not isolated incidents and called for a thorough investigation into the practices of the social services department.
Following Martinez, Teddy Martinez, another advocate, echoed the concerns, pointing to an alarming 85% increase in homelessness in Patterson and criticizing the inadequate support provided to vulnerable individuals. He highlighted the fear among community members to speak out due to potential retaliation. Teddy Martinez urged the commissioners to take responsibility and ensure that the social services system operated fairly and consistently. Both advocates underscored the need for immediate action to address these issues.
Amidst these concerns, the meeting also celebrated Italian-American Heritage Month, recognizing individuals for their contributions to the community. Commissioner Lazar honored Anthony J. Denova III with a proclamation for his nearly two decades as a county administrator. Denova was lauded for his fiscal management and leadership during the COVID-19 pandemic, including the establishment of the county’s first at-home testing program. His efforts in supporting affordable housing, education, and veterans were also highlighted. In his response, Denova reflected on his family’s immigrant history, emphasizing the positive impact immigrants have on society.
Another proclamation recognized Luca Man, executive director of PALS Plus, for his contributions to libraries in Passaic County. Man’s journey as an immigrant and his dedication to education and community service were celebrated. He shared personal anecdotes about his family’s immigration experience and the transformative power of libraries, crediting them for his success. Man’s speech highlighted the importance of accessible knowledge and the cultural bonds that unite immigrants.
The board also presented a proclamation to Tony Venturi, commending his service as a combat medic during the Vietnam War and his dedication to supporting veterans. Although Venturi could not attend due to health reasons, his representative accepted the honor on his behalf.
In addition to the recognition of individuals, the meeting included a report on various programs benefiting children and seniors. Camp Hope was highlighted for its educational initiatives, such as the “Skins and Skulls” program and “My First Hike Henry,” both designed to engage children with nature and learning. The camp’s legacy of serving underprivileged children was emphasized, with a focus on cultural heritage and community service. The upcoming sixth annual “Children’s Winter Wonderland” event and the successful “World Bicycle Day” were also noted.
The meeting concluded with routine matters, including the approval of the consent agenda and personnel matters. Before adjourning, there was a brief acknowledgment of the Italian American Heritage Month celebration and the contributions of the county’s chef, Chris Malone.
