- Meeting Overview:
The February 2nd, 2024, meeting of the Passaic County Board of Commissioners was marked by discussions on environmental health initiatives, including a new recycling program and the poly styrene foam recycling program’s success in Clifton. The meeting also focused on the restoration efforts of the historic Bay County Courthouse.
This effort is part of a broader strategy to promote recycling and reduce waste, as evidenced by the new countywide recycling program. Instead of curbside pickup, residents are encouraged to bring recyclable items to a designated drop-off center. The success of the program was bolstered by the distribution of over 6,000 reusable tote bags and the introduction of the recycling coach application, which now includes Arabic alongside English and Spanish to cater to the diverse population of Passaic County. The application is a hub for information on curbside collection and recycling events, with 27 scheduled for 2023.
The county’s focus on health and wellness was highlighted through a presentation by Dr. Gill and Aris Silly Pentel, which detailed the activities of the Health Department. Initiatives such as mosquito pool testing, food manager and handler certifications, and emergency preparedness joint exercises illustrate the multifaceted approach to maintaining public health. The establishment of a health clinic in Towaco and the various health promotion events, like Women’s Health Extravaganza and family wellness events, further demonstrate the county’s stance on health education and services. The Overdose Fatality Review team’s recognition as an exemplary agency by the State Department of Health solidifies Passaic County’s leading role in addressing public health crises.
Kelly from the Department of Cultural and Historic Affairs explained the project’s scope, which includes masonry repairs and metalwork restoration. The pre-qualification of bids for the restoration project was discussed.
Turning towards green space and recreation, the board’s public hearing on the Green Acres application for Pekman Preserve was another point of interest. The application seeks funding to develop a passive recreational area, emphasizing the importance of environmental conservation and public access to natural spaces in the county’s agenda.
The public hearing was not the only forum for citizen engagement. The public portion of the meeting allowed residents to voice their opinions, with each individual allotted three minutes to speak.
The meeting also touched on the importance of employee and law enforcement well-being, with the mention of available resources and counseling services.
In addition to these focal points, the meeting encompassed routine administrative duties, including the approval of minutes from previous meetings, a proclamation, and the consent agenda, which saw the addition of a new item. The board also approved bond ordinances for the courthouse restoration, various personnel matters, and bills. The gathering concluded with the announcement of a celebration for Black History Month.
