Pequannock School Board Celebrates Veterans Wall Dedication and Athletic Triumphs
- Meeting Overview:
The Pequannock School Board meeting was marked by the celebration of the newly dedicated veterans wall, a project completed through community collaboration, and recognition of the Pequannock Valley girl soccer team’s championship win. The board also addressed the district’s financial health, evaluation policies, and various school activities.
One item at the meeting was the acknowledgment of the veterans wall project, which was recently dedicated in an event that attracted hundreds. The board president expressed profound gratitude for the project, describing it as a cinematic experience, complete with helicopters and army vehicles, and the “greatest experience” of his tenure. The project, a tribute to local veterans, was brought to fruition with the help of multiple contractors and in-kind donors who were recognized for their contributions. Individuals such as Vince Andell from Freedom Fence, Demitro Carbone from Morris Bergen Irrigation, Steve Cunningham from STC Electric, and many others played critical roles in enhancing the aesthetic and functional elements of the monument.
The board president emphasized the community’s collective effort, noting the rapid completion of the project. He praised the camaraderie and respect that developed among the contractors, who initially were unfamiliar with each other, crediting the project’s success to their unified efforts. The dedication ceremony’s emotional impact was highlighted, with the president stating it resonated deeply with attendees.
In addition to the veterans wall, the board celebrated the accomplishments of the Pequannock Valley girl soccer team, who had an undefeated season and won the Morris County championship. The soccer coach expressed pride in the team’s determination, spirit, and growth, thanking staff and families for their support. The athletic director also recognized individual athletes from the cross country team, celebrating their achievements at the county championship, including Matt Sherburn’s new school record.
The meeting also included a presentation from certified public accountants Mrs. Mantel and Mr. Co of Nisaia LLP, who reported on the district’s financial status for the 2023-2024 school year. They noted an increase in the general fund balance by $675,000, attributed to a reduction in encumbrances and an increase in capital reserves. Despite the positive audit with no recommendations, concerns were raised about future financial challenges due to inflation and the winding down of COVID-19 grants.
The auditors commended the district’s financial management, particularly the team led by Mr. Gibbs, for their adherence to policies and procedures. However, they advised monitoring the financial support for the food service program and preparing for the expiration of pandemic-related grants. The board discussed the importance of maintaining rigorous compliance with federal and state grants, especially those associated with COVID-19, to avoid potential complications.
Another discussion revolved around the evaluation policies for individuals supervised by the board. Members debated whether to revise existing policies or create new ones, with some advocating for a streamlined approach to prevent potential issues. The importance of having a defined evaluation procedure was emphasized, with members considering both statutory requirements and the practicalities of implementation.
The board addressed ongoing efforts to ensure transparency and accessibility of district policies, including adding the previously overlooked regulation concerning home instruction due to health conditions to the district’s website. This move was part of a broader initiative to maintain comprehensive and accessible policy documentation.
In new business, members reflected on their experiences at recent events, including a Morris County ESC meeting where board governance committees were discussed. The potential for a county-wide symposium on governance plans was considered. The recent elections were also acknowledged, with congratulations extended to those re-elected or newly elected to their positions.
