Pequannock School Board Discusses Transformative Role of Technology for Students with Disabilities
- Meeting Overview:
During the recent Pequannock School Board meeting, emphasis was placed on the role of technology in supporting students with special needs, particularly those with disabilities. The meeting focused on the integration of assistive technology tools, such as Chromebooks and augmentative communication devices, to create inclusive learning environments and improve educational accessibility.
05:24One of the primary topics was the district’s implementation of Chromebooks, which are used as one-to-one devices for students across all grade levels. Approximately 2,200 Chromebooks are available, allowing students to take devices home starting in sixth grade, with earlier access for students with special needs. The devices come equipped with accessibility features like text-to-speech, screen magnification, and dictation functions. These tools are designed to benefit not only students with disabilities but also the general student population, promoting inclusivity by allowing all students to utilize the same devices in the classroom. The built-in features are continuously updated by Google to further enhance accessibility.
10:55The board also discussed the use of augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) tools, particularly highlighting the experience of a student named Jordan. Jordan, a non-verbal student with autism, faced significant communication barriers until she was introduced to AAC tools in high school. Her journey underscored the transformative impact of such technology, allowing her to effectively communicate, graduate high school, and pursue higher education. This example illustrated the importance of early access to assistive technology and its potential to alter educational experiences.
19:47In addition to existing technologies, the district has transitioned from traditional smartboards to interactive flat panel displays, known as New Line displays. These are coupled with amplification systems that enhance classroom learning, particularly for students with hearing impairments and attention difficulties. The rollout of this technology began in preschool, with plans to expand to other grades. The New Line Broadcast feature, which allows students to view content on their personal devices, was emphasized as a way to ensure equitable access to classroom materials for all students, including those with visual impairments.
27:26The meeting further explored the advancements in iPad technology, specifically its integrated accessibility features that previously required specialized equipment. The speaker noted that Apple’s AirPods could now serve as hearing aids. Despite some challenges regarding the cost and ordering of Apple products, their effectiveness for the student population was acknowledged.
37:29Additionally, a new optical character recognition device, the Scan Marker Pro, was introduced. This tool allows students to scan printed text and have it read aloud. The device supports live translation in several languages, aiding multi-language learners in understanding classroom materials.
47:08The board also addressed the integration of artificial intelligence (AI) in education. A committee has been established to develop an AI plan and guidance for teachers, focusing on academic integrity and appropriate use of AI. The potential of AI to serve as a personalized tutor was discussed, particularly in subjects like algebra. Ethical considerations and the importance of raising awareness about AI’s limitations were highlighted. Emerging technologies such as selective hearing headphones and smart glasses were also introduced.
00:01Parents were encouraged to engage with case managers for questions about assistive technology and resources.
