Pequannock School Board Meeting Focuses on College Planning and New Counseling Tools
- Meeting Overview:
At the recent Pequannock School Board meeting, the primary focus was on initiatives to assist high school students and their families in navigating the college application process.
The introduction of the Score platform was a key feature at the meeting, aimed at enhancing the college application experience for students. This tool serves as a centralized hub where students can manage their college applications, track achievements, and connect with their Common App accounts. The platform’s scattergram tool provides a visual representation of acceptance rates in relation to students’ GPAs and test scores, offering a clear picture of their standing compared to past applicants. This feature is intended to assist students in making informed decisions about their college applications. Counselors emphasized the importance of using Score to monitor application deadlines and fees.
In addition to the Score platform, the meeting highlighted the upcoming financial aid night on October 16, which will provide crucial information about financial aid processes via Zoom. This event is part of a broader effort by the counseling department to equip students and parents with the necessary tools and knowledge for the college application journey. The meeting also announced a college admissions panel, featuring admissions counselors from Lehi, Montclair, and TCJ, where students can engage in a Q&A session about the admissions process.
The discussion also covered the importance of maintaining strong academic performance, particularly during the senior year. It was noted that colleges review transcripts from the first three years of high school and that any midyear report submitted through the Common Application updates colleges on major grades and GPA. The recurring theme was that “grades do matter,” underscoring the necessity for students to remain diligent in their studies even during their final year.
Another aspect of the meeting was the emphasis on visiting college campuses. Attendees noted that experiencing a college environment firsthand can influence a student’s decision-making process. The use of tools like Google Earth was suggested for students to get a preliminary sense of a college’s surroundings before visiting in person. Families were encouraged to take advantage of open houses and campus tours, as these experiences help students determine which colleges might be the best fit for them.
The meeting also addressed test-optional admissions policies. However, it was advised that students should pay attention to the specific requirements of individual programs within test-optional schools, as some may still necessitate test scores. This topic was closely linked to the broader conversation about standardized testing, with participants discussing the differences between the SAT and ACT, including the scoring systems and subject focus. Students were encouraged to choose the test that aligns best with their strengths and interests.
Furthermore, the notion of “demonstrated interest” was discussed, highlighting the importance of students interacting with colleges through official tours, emails, and college fairs. These interactions are tracked by admissions offices and can be a factor in the admissions process.
