Pierz City Council Approves Fire Department Benefit Increase Amid Equipment Funding Challenges
- Meeting Overview:
In a recent meeting, the Pierz City Council focused on critical matters concerning the Fire Department, including the approval of increased retirement benefits for firefighters and the ongoing challenge of funding essential equipment replacements.
The most notable agenda item was the Pierz Fire Department’s request to increase retirement benefits for its members. The Fire Department proposed raising the annual retirement benefit from $3,200 to $3,400, a measure already approved by the department’s rank and file. This adjustment reflects the department’s effort to maintain competitive benefits and address historical funding challenges, reminiscent of financial difficulties faced in 2008. The proposal was met with unanimous support from the council.
Financial discussions extended to the Fire Department’s annual report for 2025, which detailed the department’s expanded coverage to all 36 townships, an increase from the previous six. The department responded to 77 calls in 2025, including nine mutual aid calls for incidents like grass fires and a significant fire at a resort in Garrison. The year ended with an estimated property loss of approximately $1.2 million from these incidents. The department’s leadership structure remained unchanged, with plans to reappoint the Chief and Captain later in the year.
A concern for the department is the need to replace Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBAs) to meet compliance deadlines. The cost for these replacements ranges between $190,000 and $210,000, a substantial sum for which previous grant applications were denied. However, Pioneer Mutual Insurance has pledged $20,000, and local townships have agreed to share the financial burden. The city plans to renew efforts to secure additional grants, highlighting the collaborative approach to address these equipment needs.
Discussions also included updates on city operations and equipment, particularly regarding the fire department’s future needs. A grant application will be submitted to assist with acquiring personal protective equipment, emphasizing the critical nature of this funding. A previous donation of $2,000 from Harding Lash contributed to purchasing new airbag lift supports.
Looking ahead, the replacement of the fire department’s pumpers is a financial concern, with the next major replacement slated for 2029. The estimated cost for a new pumper is around $700,000, and the council is exploring grant opportunities, including a potential Sourcewell grant for $50,000. The challenge of selling old equipment for minimal return was noted, and the importance of maintaining compliance with National Fire Protection Association standards to preserve the city’s insurance rating was emphasized.
The council also reviewed the claims report for February, totaling $323,382.87. A reminder was issued for a scheduled workshop on March 17th.
In other city updates, the public works department reported the addition of a new pickup truck and proposed updated vehicle stickers, which received no objections. The department’s staff was commended for their efforts, particularly one member, Rick, for his progress.
Andy provided updates on clubhouse renovations, noting the completion of hood and mini-splits, with flooring work nearing completion. The quality of interior painting received positive remarks, and Andy expressed anticipation for the upcoming busy season, with ongoing vendor meetings aiding operational readiness.
The golf course situation was briefly addressed, with mention of tree removal activities. The city administrator reported on the status of the audit and confirmed the closure of the ARPA fund from 2021. A scheduled meeting with St. Croix regarding playground development was also noted, set to occur before the next workshop.
