- Meeting Overview:
The Pierz City Council meeting covered a range of topics, with attention devoted to ongoing construction projects and related financial matters. The council approved a pay application for $397,203.75, representing nearly 87% completion of the project, while addressing resident concerns regarding potential delays and their impact on assessment charges.
During the meeting, the council discussed the ongoing construction project and its cost implications. Residents had expressed concerns over delays, particularly on Peter Street, and how these might affect assessment charges. A council member inquired about the potential impact of additional work orders and digging on their assessments. It was clarified that assessments are based on street width, with Peter Street and First Northeast considered together due to their size. The only change order involved extra subcut work in an alley, which would not affect Peter Street’s costs.
The council then deliberated on pay application number five, which covered recent concrete work and initial paving stages. The $397,203.75 payment was unanimously approved after a brief discussion.
Further updates were provided by the Public Works Director on various operational projects. Centennial Drive had been reshouldered to accommodate heavy truck traffic, and a new plow had arrived for the loader, while the old plow truck was undergoing potential fuel tank replacement. The director confirmed a snow removal contract with the Minnesota Department of Transportation for Main Street. Additionally, plans were set for tree trimming around power lines at the golf course, and storm sewer drains were being cleared in preparation for spring.
The meeting also addressed a suggestion from the Public Works Director to improve signage for the brush pile. The council agreed to move an existing sign to the gate for better visibility.
In other council business, the clubhouse director reported on the successful conclusion of the season. The campground had closed, and the clubhouse was being winterized. Future plans included securing sponsorships for golf holes and training staff on scheduling and point-of-sale systems for the upcoming year.
Meanwhile, the city administrator briefed the council on the League of Minnesota Cities’ “Mayor for a Day” contest, encouraging local fourth and fifth graders to participate. A small recognition was planned for the chosen student, along with a photo opportunity for social media. The administrator also reminded the council about the upcoming Halloween event, where the city would distribute candy from City Hall.
The council moved on to approve a gambling permit for Holy Trinity School’s bingo event set for February 2, 2025. This was followed by the approval of a liquor license for Tony’s Tavern, formerly Pat’s Bar. The new owners had completed all necessary applications and background checks, receiving praise for their thoroughness.
In planning and zoning matters, three applications were reviewed. The council approved Scott Becker’s request to split his property, contingent on its merging with Eric Stuck’s parcel. Stuck’s fence permit was also approved, with the condition that a merge permit application be submitted. Additionally, Jordan Shabil received approval for a temporary structure permit for a canvas hoop garage, with a stipulation to dismantle it by April 30, 2025.
