Pinellas County School Board Approves Substantial Salary Increases Amid Policy Updates and Public Concerns
- Meeting Overview:
In a recent meeting of the Pinellas County School Board, significant salary increases for various employee groups were approved, driven by public support through a referendum. This meeting also saw discussions on policy amendments to align with state law changes, public concerns about school designs in relation to climate change, and the community’s involvement in educational and charitable initiatives.
The board approved salary increases for multiple employee categories, notably including a 12.74% average increase for Pinellas Educational Support Professionals Association (PESPA) employees. These improvements were made feasible by a referendum passed by Pinellas County citizens. Without this referendum, such salary adjustments would have been improbable. The board emphasized the necessity of public support, with one member stating that the referendum was “the only reason” these increases could be achieved, especially when compared to the less than 1% statewide salary trend for K-12 education.
The salary increases extended to the Fraternal Order of Police (FOP) and professional technical supervisory staff, with average increases of 7.34% and 5.05%, respectively. The superintendent reiterated the impact of the referendum on the district’s financial capabilities, stressing the role of community support in these developments.
Alongside financial decisions, the meeting addressed updates to district policies, particularly those concerning ethical conduct and graduation requirements. Aligned with recent state law changes, these updates included modifications to policies 1210, 3210, and 4210, which now require temporarily removing instructional personnel under certain conditions, as per Senate Bill 1374. Additionally, graduation requirements were revised to comply with House Bill 1105, allowing marching band participation as an alternative for physical education or performing arts credit.
Public comments during the meeting brought to light concerns regarding school infrastructure and ethics. A speaker criticized the architectural designs of school buildings, specifically citing Clearwater High School, for their potential exacerbation of heat and environmental issues, linking these concerns to climate change and the possibility of worsening hurricanes. The speaker questioned the board’s understanding of ethical standards, highlighting a need for greater accountability and transparency.
Community engagement was another focal point, with the board discussing the success of the Exceptional Student Education Fair for College, Career, and Life. This event attracted nearly 200 students and families. High school students considering extended transition and college opportunities were also supported. The board expressed appreciation for schools like Gibbs High School and Clearwater High School, which hosted events that facilitated these initiatives.
The board also acknowledged the holiday spirit present in schools, despite academic pressures such as high school exams and state progress monitoring assessments. Several schools were commended for their charitable contributions during the holiday season, including Seldon Elementary’s donation of over a thousand items to a local food pantry and Starky Elementary’s 39th annual Salvation Army canned food drive. Richard O. Jacobson Technical High School was recognized for packing 20,000 meals in collaboration with Rotary International and Rise Against Hunger.
Public comments concluded with discussions on the Schools of Hope initiative, where concerns were voiced about the use of public funds for this program. A retired nurse and grandmother urged the board to issue a proclamation opposing the initiative, similar to Hillsborough County’s stance. Another speaker shared a distressing personal incident involving her son being left on a school bus, calling for accountability and assurances against future occurrences.
