Pinellas County School Board Celebrates Black History Month Amid Broad Educational Initiatives
- Meeting Overview:
The Pinellas County School Board convened to approve significant proclamations, including the designation of February 2026 as Black History Month and Career and Technical Education Month, while also recognizing schools for excellence in specialized programs. Discussions touched on enhancing educational opportunities, community engagement, and infrastructure improvements.
A central focus of the meeting was the unanimous approval of a proclamation designating February 2026 as Black History Month. The proclamation, read aloud during the meeting, traced the origins of Black History Month to Dr. Carter Godwin Woodson’s establishment of Black History Week in 1926, highlighting the evolution of this observance into a month-long national celebration. The board emphasized the integration of African-American history into social studies courses throughout the district, a practice that has earned Pinellas County Schools recognition from the Florida Commissioner of Education’s African-American History Task Force for its exemplary curriculum.
The board also approved a proclamation for Career and Technical Education Month. Dr. Dwayne Hines, area superintendent for career technical and adult education, highlighted the robust offerings available to students, noting that many programs begin in elementary school and continue through high school. Last year, students in the district earned over 13,000 industry certifications, many of which are eligible for college credit. The board recognized the significant enrollment in these programs, with more than 27,000 high school students participating.
Recognition was also given to schools achieving the Academy of Distinction designation by the Stavros Career Education Board. Four schools were lauded for their rigorous efforts in preparing students for future success, including the Center for Wellness and Medical Professions at Bogusa High School and the Academy of Engineering at East Lake High School. Each academy received public acknowledgment and financial support to enhance their programs.
Infrastructure improvements were addressed with the approval of an agreement with WMaker Jensen Architects for renovations at the Gus A. Stavros Institute. The project, funded through legislative appropriations and district capital budgets, aims to enrich the institute’s offerings with an enhanced STEM experience for students.
The meeting also spotlighted Kuru Creek and Plum Elementary Schools, which were selected to pilot chapters of the National Elementary Art Honor Society due to their exceptional art programs.
In alignment with its focus on broadening educational opportunities, the board announced the opening of the acceptance period for district application programs and special assignments. This year marks the first simultaneous offering of magnet and special assignments, expanding access to specialized education within the district. Additionally, two more schools, Thood Marshall Fundamental Middle School and John Hopkins Middle School, received national merit awards from the Magnet Schools of America, bringing the district’s total to 27 awards.
The meeting also included discussions about the importance of effective communication with families, particularly regarding educational alternative schools and their impact on families in South St. Pete. Concerns were raised about the distance from these programs and the challenges it presents.
Public participation featured Marcia Palto, who advocated for clearer policies regarding therapy dogs in schools, citing the positive impact these animals have on students with unique challenges. Palto shared her experience with her therapy dog, Wrigley, at Sandy Lane Elementary, highlighting the benefits observed in student reading skills and overall well-being.
