Pinellas School Board Honors Safety Personnel, Addresses Policy Updates, and Celebrates Achievements
- Meeting Overview:
The recent Pinellas County School Board meeting focused on recognizing outstanding school safety personnel, discussing significant policy updates, and celebrating various achievements within the district. Notably, the board honored several individuals for their exceptional contributions to school safety, approved multiple amendments to district policies to ensure compliance with current laws, and acknowledged student and staff accomplishments across various disciplines.
The meeting commenced with the presentation of the 2025-2026 school safety personnel awards. Chief of Police Joe Whisman introduced the recipients, beginning with Patrick Walton from Bokea High School, who was awarded the Jesse Dorsy Campus Activities Monitor of the Year. Walton’s quick thinking during a potentially dangerous situation at an athletic event was highlighted as a key factor in his recognition. Andrew Stamus from San Jose Elementary School received the School Safety Officer of the Year award for his dedication to building relationships with students, particularly those on the autism spectrum. Maurice Blossom from James B. Sanderland School was honored with the Michael A. Hawkins School Resource Officer of the Year award, praised for his leadership and efforts to improve traffic safety around the school. The board emphasized the commitment of all safety personnel to student welfare.
Following the awards, the board deliberated on proposed amendments to several policies, reflecting ongoing efforts to align district regulations with current case law and statutory requirements. Notable among these were amendments to whistleblower policies 1211, 3211, and 4211, which aim to protect employees from retaliation. These changes designate the Office of Professional Standards as the entity responsible for handling complaints and allow for civil actions without exhausting other remedies first. The board approved the motion unanimously, and a public hearing on these amendments is scheduled for June 23, 2026.
The board also discussed amendments to employment policies. These revisions aim to maintain consistency with current law and clarify probationary periods for support staff in the absence of collective bargaining agreements. Additionally, the board addressed the need for clearer language in policies concerning the employment of administrative and instructional staff, particularly regarding the superintendent’s authority in hiring recommendations and requirements for out-of-field teachers.
In a related policy update, the board proposed repealing a mentoring program policy in favor of incorporating its elements into a broader volunteer policy. Amendments to the Code of Student Conduct were also on the agenda, consolidating disciplinary actions and refining language related to felony arrests and off-campus conduct. A new policy was introduced to specifically address wireless communication devices, separating these rules from general student discipline to improve clarity.
The meeting also highlighted significant achievements within the district, including the recognition of Jason Brooks, the food and nutrition manager at Sandy Lane Elementary School, as one of five Florida school lunch heroes. Brooks received a $2,000 cash award for his efforts, acknowledged during a surprise breakfast service. Additionally, the board celebrated the success of students and mentors involved in the Take Stock in Children and Lunch Pals programs, and ten teachers were honored with Cheers to Public Service Awards.
Students’ accomplishments were prominently featured, with recognition given to Ariana Gonzalez from Mangrove Bay Middle School for her national honors in the National Junior Art Honor Society exhibition. The board also celebrated athletic achievements, including state champions in tennis and track and field, and announced the last day of school for May 28.
In public comments, Lee Bryant addressed the board regarding public education funding in Florida, citing the state’s ranking of 41st in per-student spending and the decline in average teacher salaries. Bryant called for collective action to address funding inadequacies, emphasizing the importance of advocating for necessary changes to support students, teachers, and administrators.
