Pipestone Area School Board Reviews Student Performance, Addresses Attendance Concerns, and Updates Policies
- Meeting Overview:
The Pipestone Area School Board’s recent meeting in June 2025 delved into several matters, including student performance metrics, a focus on attendance policies, updates to educational programs, and financial reviews.
The meeting began with a review of student growth and performance, revealing that 455 out of 518 students demonstrated progress over the academic year. Despite this positive outcome, the board recognized the need to address attendance issues, particularly with middle and high school absentee rates standing at 7% and 9%, respectively. The administration expressed a commitment to improving the overall attendance rate, currently at 94.63%, by strengthening the connection between home and school. A revision to the attendance policy is underway to require families to provide reasons for absences.
The board also reviewed updates to the curriculum, which included the adoption of the Benchmark Advance program for elementary education, aligning with Minnesota standards and the science of reading. In anticipation of the next academic year, new high school courses in social studies and programming were introduced. The Minnesota Multi-tiered System of Supports (MN MTSS) was another focal point, designed to address the needs of all students through a tiered support system. Discussions ensured that MN MTSS interventions would complement, not replace, special education services.
Concerns were raised about the adequacy of resources to implement these tiered supports effectively, particularly for high-achieving students. A suggestion emerged to utilize the gifted and talented fund reserve, which stands at $273,688, to enhance programs for these students. The board discussed the potential for a counselor or social worker to guide such programs, emphasizing experiential learning over direct instruction.
Financial discussions were robust, focusing on the fiscal year 2026 budget. The board addressed a projected deficit of one million dollars in the food service fund, prompting ongoing talks with providers to improve offerings like whole muscle chicken sandwiches and manage costs. The community education finances showed a positive fund balance, thanks to increased funding from the voluntary pre-kindergarten program.
Roof repairs were another financial highlight, with the district exploring Long-Term Facilities Maintenance (LTFM) funding to alleviate taxpayer burdens. Property casualty insurance costs saw a significant increase due to adjusted property replacement valuations, with EMC selected as the carrier after thorough evaluation.
The board’s review extended to policy matters, stressing the importance of communication between teachers and parents, especially regarding student performance. A policy meeting was suggested to align expectations among teachers and coaches. Concerns over pets on school premises were also addressed, citing potential allergy issues and the need for a formal policy.
Donations were acknowledged, including $2,000 from the Arrow Booster Club for an acceleration camp, reflecting community support for school initiatives. The board also approved an education and identity access management board resolution, allowing Dr. Willert to grant access for district personnel to submit reports to the Minnesota Department of Education.
