- Meeting Overview:
In a recent session, the Piscataway Township Council passed several ordinances related to local infrastructure and zoning, while also fielding public comments on various community concerns. Notably, the council approved an ordinance for the redevelopment of 4100 New Brunswick Avenue, reverting its zoning to light manufacturing, and ordinances authorizing Title 39 enforcement on New England Avenue and addressing vehicle weight restrictions on certain streets.
The council’s approval of an ordinance amending the zoning for a property on New Brunswick Avenue to its original light manufacturing designation was a key point of interest. The zoning change is part of a broader redevelopment plan.
In addressing infrastructure, the council also moved forward with an ordinance that would authorize Title 39 enforcement on New England Avenue.
Furthermore, the council adopted an ordinance on first reading that concerns the acquisition of rights of way and easements for improvements to New Durham Road. This ordinance will be subject to a second reading and a public hearing, slated for August 13, 2024. Additionally, another ordinance on first reading was adopted, which will authorize special assessments for sidewalks on Sutton’s Lane, with a second reading and public hearing scheduled for September 10, 2024. Both ordinances are part of the council’s agenda to improve local roads and pedestrian infrastructure.
During the meeting, the council also passed a resolution on an ordinance regarding vehicles of a designated weight being excluded from certain streets. The measure, which aims to protect roadways from potential damage caused by heavy vehicles, was adopted following a public comment period during which no objections were raised.
The council addressed another ordinance authorizing the execution of a financial agreement with RG Normandy Urban Renewal LLC for a property on Normandy Drive. This agreement relates to the financial aspects of development and urban renewal, a sign of ongoing investment in the township’s growth and revitalization.
The meeting’s public comment period featured residents raising a range of issues, from local infrastructure to international affairs. One resident inquired about the criteria for a solicitor license and the process for placing a municipal lien on properties related to abatement of public nuisance, to which the council provided clarification. Another resident sought details on a grant application for roadway improvements on Old New Brunswick Road, with the council confirming the specific section targeted and the Department of Transportation grant being utilized.
Some residents expressed concerns about local taxes, infrastructure maintenance, and affordable housing, reflecting ongoing discussions about the township’s growth and the balance between development and maintaining the town’s quality of life. A speaker highlighted the presence of empty buildings and vandalism, while another voiced concerns about the wording of a resolution pertaining to hostages and prisoners, advocating for a change in language.
In addition to infrastructure and zoning matters, the council’s agenda included commendations of President Joe Biden and announcements of upcoming township events, such as a summertime concert series, National Night Out, and a township-wide garage sale.
