Piscataway Council Meeting Highlights: Immigration Reforms and New Drone Program
- Meeting Overview:
At the recent Piscataway Township Council meeting, the council made strides in addressing immigration reform and announced the introduction of a cost-effective drone program to enhance public safety and municipal operations. Additionally, discussions encompassed budgetary allocations, affordable housing obligations, and community engagement through cultural and youth events.
The most pressing topic was the council’s resolution supporting reforms related to Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). The resolution, which aligns with a joint statement from the United States Conference of Mayors, calls for federal law enforcement to model professionalism and prioritize community safety. It emphasizes the humane treatment of all residents, regardless of their immigration status, and urges Congress to modernize immigration policies. This resolution is part of a broader effort by the township to respond to community concerns about ICE’s actions and to uphold the safety and dignity of all residents.
Public comments revealed mixed reactions to the resolution. A resident, Jessica Prattville, appreciated the council’s focus on ICE issues but questioned the adequacy of the proposed resolution. She expressed a desire for the council to take a stronger stance against ICE’s severe actions in other parts of the country. The council acknowledged the limitations imposed by legal constraints but highlighted a mayoral executive order designed to restrict ICE’s use of municipal facilities.
In tandem with immigration reform, the council introduced a new drone program aimed at enhancing public safety and operational efficiency. The program, developed by the township’s IT team, promises significant cost savings compared to vendor proposals. The drone will serve multiple functions, including aiding in searches for missing persons, monitoring crash scenes, and assessing public works needs like tree health in parks. The council president highlighted the program’s potential benefits across various departments, emphasizing its timely relevance given recent public safety concerns.
The meeting also addressed affordable housing and development fees through an ordinance that proposes repealing and replacing Chapter 21, focusing on zoning and affordable housing. The ordinance, introduced for first reading, is part of a new plan accepted by the court to meet and exceed the township’s COAH (Council on Affordable Housing) obligations. The ordinance will undergo a second reading and public hearing on April 14, 2026.
Budgetary discussions were another focal point of the meeting. The introduction of the calendar year 2026 municipal budget was presented, with general appropriations totaling approximately $98.67 million. The budget includes significant allocations for municipal purposes, and its approval was met with unanimous council support. The mayor noted the township’s stable credit rating and reported a 7% increase in the industrial and commercial ratable base. However, he expressed concern over flat state aid and rising expenditures, particularly health insurance costs.
Community engagement was underscored through various events and initiatives. Council members acknowledged cultural observations such as Ramadan and the Holi festival, emphasizing the township’s diverse community. Upcoming youth events, including Easter egg hunts and Little League opening day, were highlighted as opportunities to foster community spirit.
The meeting concluded with commendations for the finance department’s diligent work on the municipal budget and plans for ongoing capital projects, including infrastructure improvements and the construction of a comfort station at Green Acres. Acknowledgments were made for International Women’s Day and Women’s History Month, celebrating the achievements of women in various sectors.
