- Meeting Overview:
The Piscataway School Board meeting focused on the introduction of a new student representative, increased school security measures, and updates on various facility projects. These topics were discussed in detail, providing significant insights into the current priorities and actions of the board.
The meeting began with the introduction of Tyler West as the new student representative. West expressed enthusiasm about his role and provided an update on the various activities and initiatives taking place in the district’s schools. He highlighted the start of several school clubs, including the National Honor Societies and Student Government Association, which are preparing for a pep rally and Spirit Week. College planning for seniors is also underway, with counselors assisting students in essay writing and utilizing the Writing Center as a valuable resource. An important update from West was the new cafeteria contract that now provides free breakfast, which has been positively received by students.
West also reported on the boys’ soccer team, which currently holds a 3-0 record, and the football team, which has a 1-1 record and is preparing for an upcoming game against Old Bridge. He noted that the school has increased security measures, including a higher number of security guards and a new ID policy requiring students to present IDs during first and third periods. Additionally, an African-American studies class has been formally introduced following a successful trial, and plans for a trip to Quebec for French students are in motion.
Board members showed appreciation for the increased security and the positive impact of summer Advanced Placement (AP) classes. They emphasized the importance of preparing students ahead of the school year to ensure they are not disadvantaged in AP testing. The application process for the student representative position was also discussed, with West sharing his experience of submitting a video and participating in an interview with school administrators.
The President of the Board highlighted the strong start to the school year and upcoming back-to-school nights as opportunities for parents to engage with teachers. The acknowledgment of student representative Tomi’s community service project related to drug overdose awareness was noted, where she planted flags to memorialize victims as part of her Gold Award as a Girl Scout.
A moment of silence was observed in remembrance of the anniversary of 9/11, honoring those lost in the tragedy, particularly referencing a staff member’s personal loss. The Superintendent’s report followed, highlighting various school year activities and summer preparations undertaken by staff. A notable mention was made of Joe Tani, a former teacher and coach, who received a prestigious award and donated the accompanying cash prize back to the school program.
Discussions on personnel and labor relations included a motion for approval of various items, which was carried unanimously. The meeting also covered fiscal and operations updates, addressing audits and capital projects, and concerns regarding food service fund balances notified by the New Jersey Department of Agriculture.
Facility projects were a significant topic of discussion, focusing on kitchen equipment installations and HVAC upgrades. The district completed installations of kitchen serving lines at Grand View, and projects for other schools were underway. Roofing upgrades and paving projects were also reported as completed at multiple schools. However, an issue was raised regarding the solar panel systems at Piscataway High School, where one inverter was not functioning, and there were wiring deficiencies. This prompted discussions about the costs associated with repairs and exploring options for replacing the solar panels.
During public comments, resident Jerry Patel raised concerns about school safety, specifically in light of recent events involving violence at schools. Patel noted seeing police officers at schools and inquired about measures the district was implementing to ensure safety. The board responded by highlighting ongoing safety measures, including regular meetings with the police department and emphasizing educating students about safety protocols. They reassured the community that comprehensive strategies were in place but could not disclose specific safety procedures publicly.
Patel further discussed the importance of student awareness and education regarding safety, stressing that students should be empowered to report any concerns. The board acknowledged the importance of building relationships within the school environment and noted that while counselors are vital, students often find comfort in approaching various staff members. A suggestion was made to include information about counselors in back-to-school communications to help students identify whom to approach when they need assistance.
Policy matters included discussions on investment policies recommended for better capturing potential returns and policy 57221 concerning school yearbooks. Curriculum updates were also discussed, highlighting the inclusion of Community-Based Instruction (CBI) trips for life skills students, which received positive feedback.
