- Meeting Overview:
The recent Piscataway Township Council meeting highlighted the municipality’s financial achievement of a double-A plus stable rating from Moody’s, alongside a series of festive announcements for the holiday season. The rating was praised as an affirmation of the township’s fiscal stability, though discussions pointed to challenges in achieving a higher triple-A rating due to household income metrics influenced by the presence of Rutgers University.
Mayor Brian C. Wahler shared the news of Piscataway’s financial rating, emphasizing its significance for the township’s economic health. He noted that the double-A plus rating reflects the township’s strong fiscal management and stability. However, he expressed concern that certain metrics, particularly household income statistics skewed by the student population of Rutgers University, prevented the township from obtaining a triple-A rating. Mayor Wahler described this situation as a “little discrepancy” in how rating agencies evaluate the township’s finances, implying that despite meeting other critical criteria, these metrics hindered a higher rating.
Amid the financial discussions, the council meeting also turned festive with announcements of upcoming holiday events. Council members extended holiday greetings and highlighted various initiatives to engage the community. A township tree lighting event was announced, inviting residents to participate in the celebrations. Councilman Espinosa reminded everyone to drive safely during the holiday season, citing the increase in drivers attending holiday parties. Councilwoman Lombardi discussed the holiday decorating contest, encouraging registrations and mentioning a holiday traditions event at East Jersey Old Town. Additionally, she acknowledged Councilwoman Carmichael’s retirement.
The holiday spirit continued with the announcement of the Mayor’s TV show featuring Santa Claus, scheduled for the following Monday. Young residents were encouraged to call in and share their Christmas wishes with Santa. Santa is also expected to make appearances at various events throughout the township, including visits to firehouses and on Christmas Eve.
Moving on to legislative matters, the council unanimously approved several ordinances during the meeting’s first reading. These included the acquisition of properties identified as block 11317 lot 23.02 and block 303 lot 17.01. Another ordinance involved a financial agreement with IDIL 1551 South Washington Urban Renewal LLC. Additionally, an ordinance was introduced to amend the municipal code by adding a chapter related to a mayoral advisory commission on public relations and updating traffic regulations. Each ordinance received unanimous support from the council members.
The council further discussed the agenda session for December 10, 2024, which included plans for constructing local improvement sidewalks on Sutton’s Lane and Old New Brunswick Road. No comments or questions were raised regarding these items or others, such as the acquisition of a parcel on Hos Lane or the sale of several lots and blocks. An ordinance for procuring equipment, funded at $1,735,000, and another for street and road improvements at $2,100,000, were also introduced without public or council comments.
During the public portion, a resident named David questioned a consent agenda item involving a $197,000 expenditure, which was clarified to cover a one-year period. Another resident, April, raised concerns about a storm drain issue that remained unresolved for months despite previous reports. The council acknowledged the complaint, emphasizing the importance of reporting through official channels and promising to follow up.
Lastly, the meeting touched upon the topic of perceived partisanship in school board races. A council member suggested reviewing the election process, considering a return to the previous schedule to address these concerns. The council agreed to further investigate the matter.
