- Meeting Overview:
In a recent meeting, the Piscataway Township Zoning Board of Adjustment approved multiple applications with conditions, elected Sean Cahill as the new chairperson, and navigated through technical difficulties to ensure a smooth session. The board addressed applications involving fence and shed approvals, which included discussions on property lines, easements, and the removal of unauthorized structures. Amid these deliberations, Steve Weisman was re-elected as vice chairperson and secretary, while Jim Canal and John Chadwick were nominated respectively for board attorney and planner.
One of the key applications the board addressed was from Rolando Solace concerning an addition to a house on Fairview Avenue. Solace agreed to modify the plans according to the board’s recommendations. The board approved the application with amendments.
Another application involved Beverly Reynolds, who sought approval for a fence replacement. Reynolds encountered confusion due to the absence of a property survey, prompting a discussion on the implications of building on an easement. The board approved Reynolds’ application with specific conditions.
The board also considered an application from Derek Bradshaw and Ida Gonzalez, who replaced a fence without obtaining the necessary permit. The discussion revolved around the fence’s location concerning the side triangle at an intersection, a factor for ensuring visibility and road safety. The application was approved with modifications.
A particularly unique case involved an application seeking approval for a six-foot fence located in the site triangle of the applicant’s yard. The board recognized the intersection’s non-traditional layout and, after noting improvements made by the applicant, such as the removal of shrubs, they approved the application conditionally. The condition was an agreement with the township attorney, which points to the board’s flexibility in dealing with zoning issues that do not fit the standard criteria.
Sheila Hobson’s application presented another interesting scenario. Hobson sought approval for a fence and sheds on her property, leading to a debate regarding the number of sheds and the existence of unauthorized structures. The board’s decision to approve Hobson’s application came with a stipulation that any unsanctioned structures be removed and a specified area be restored with grass.
The reorganization portion of the meeting saw Sean Cahill being elected as the new chairperson, with Steve Weisman continuing his role as vice chairperson and secretary. Miss Buckley was nominated to remain as the recording clerk.
