Pitman Board of Education Discusses Significant NJGPA Score Improvements and Upcoming Projects
- Meeting Overview:
In a recent Pitman Borough Council meeting, discussions centered around the New Jersey Graduation Proficiency Assessment (NJGPA) results, revealing that Pitman students outperformed state averages in mathematics. Additionally, the meeting touched on ongoing construction projects and future plans for district facilities, alongside updates on curriculum enhancements and policy revisions.
The meeting began with a detailed presentation on the NJGPA results, highlighting significant improvements in student performance, particularly in mathematics. Mr. Caliano reported that 92 students took the NJGPA, with 63% of them deemed graduation ready in math, surpassing the state average of 58%. This marks a noteworthy 6.2% improvement over the previous year and positions Pitman 5% above the state average in math proficiency for 11th graders. However, in English Language Arts (ELA), Pitman’s performance was slightly below the state average, with a graduation readiness rate of 80.4% compared to the state’s 80.7%. Despite this, the district has shown a steady progression in ELA scores, closing the gap from the previous year.
The board acknowledged these achievements and discussed potential strategies to further support student success, considering the district’s strengths in mathematics and areas for growth in ELA. The discussion also touched upon the available options for students who do not meet the NJGPA requirements, including alternate assessments like the PSAT and an appeal process.
Attention then shifted to updates on ongoing and upcoming projects within the district. The Finance and Facilities Committee, having met previously, discussed sponsorship opportunities for signage on the football field and plans for acquiring tenants for lease options at district properties. The committee also reviewed referendum projects, including necessary irrigation repairs and track color selections, with red and black identified as optimal choices due to their UV stability. Final decisions on the track color are anticipated soon, with input from the new athletic director and involved contractors.
In terms of facilities, the superintendent provided updates on the construction projects related to a referendum, including the junior-senior high school vestibule and partial roof replacement, both of which are progressing on schedule. Recent heavy rains had caused minor water infiltration issues, but these are being addressed in coordination with contractors. The completion of the board of education offices remains on track, and discussions about leasing space in the Elk School District were noted, considering potential interest in current office spaces.
Curriculum and instructional matters were also a focal point, with the Curriculum and Instruction Committee introducing new appointments and potential program enhancements. The committee welcomed new hires, including Mrs. Daro in art and Mrs. Tucci in science, and discussed scheduling improvements to maximize dual credit opportunities for high school students in business and STEAM academies. A potential new program, Sarah’s Spanish School, was introduced, offering a unique approach to Spanish language instruction through video lessons from a Spanish-speaking educator. While initial feedback was positive, the committee decided to evaluate district teachers before implementing the program.
Further discussions included policy revisions, notably the development of an elopement policy for staff guidance and measures to address students arriving at school with the smell of marijuana. The Communication and Policy Committee proposed verification measures and alternative clothing provisions for affected students, alongside revisions to policy 5440 concerning student recognition based on weighted GPA.
