Pitman Borough Celebrates Retirees’ 114 Years of Combined Service and Student Achievements
- Meeting Overview:
The recent Pitman Borough Council meeting was a night of recognition, celebrating retiring educators with a cumulative 114 years of service and acknowledging outstanding student achievements. The event emphasized the community’s appreciation for long-serving staff members and the accomplishments of students across various programs.
03:31The evening’s highlight was the recognition of retiring educators, who collectively contributed over a century of service to the Pitman School District. Dr. Sherry Lombardo, retiring after 22 years as principal of Pitman Junior Senior High, was the first to be honored. Her career spanned roles as an English teacher, director of guidance, and vice principal in other districts, accumulating over 25 years in leadership. Lombardo expressed gratitude towards her colleagues and the board, noting her dedication to creating a welcoming environment for students: “Those students that I have had over the last 20 years… are the reason why I come in every day.”
05:17Grant Shivers, the athletic director at Pitman Junior Senior High, was also recognized for his retirement after seven years in the district and over 40 years in education and athletics. Shivers reflected on his tenure fondly, describing his experience as “awesome” and thanking the community for the opportunity to work with them.
07:12Mrs. Michelle Panchelli Capello from Pitman Elementary School, who retired after 25 years, was celebrated for her 31-year career as a special education teacher. Known for her dedication to building positive relationships with students and families, Capello humorously remarked, “When you have your students come up and then they say oh and here’s my mom and you taught her too. That’s when you know it’s time to stop.”
09:26The ceremony also acknowledged Mrs. Tracy Dice, who had dedicated 31 years to the district, and Mrs. Stacy Hess, who had served for 29 years, both unable to attend the event. Their contributions to mentoring new teachers and fostering student service through involvement in clubs were highlighted in absentia.
12:24Following the retiree acknowledgments, the program shifted focus to community volunteers and student achievements. Elizabeth Flanigan and Melissa Brown were commended for their extensive volunteer contributions at Memorial School and Pitman Elementary School, respectively, receiving applause for their support.
18:12The student recognitions began with acknowledgments of achievements within music programs. Students from the All South Jersey Junior High band and chorus were highlighted for their selection to these prestigious ensembles. Notable mentions included eighth graders Becket Campbell, Allora Pylon, Ezra Ralph, and Emma Shyler, who performed in March at Firmwood Middle School in Egg Harbor Township. Additionally, the South Jersey Junior High Chorus featured musical excellence from students like Jonah Frost, Allora Pylon, and Julia Turra.
22:19Transitioning to Pitman Senior High School, the All South Jersey Choir and Senior High Honors Chorus recognized students like Fiona James and Megan Mizola. The Olympic Conference Honor Band acknowledged four students, including Liam Biali and Mia Gladney, who were requested to remain on stage for further awards. Boy State and Girl’s Career Institute delegates, along with Rotary Youth Leadership awardees, were also introduced, highlighting the diverse accomplishments of Pitman’s students.
28:49The recognition extended to academic achievements, with the Pitman Board of Education honoring student representatives Rebecca Maza and Aubrey Yordi for their transformative contributions. The top five students in the class of 2025 were celebrated for their academic excellence, based on a weighted GPA over seven semesters.
42:32As the evening progressed, academic awards were distributed across various grade levels, from elementary to high school. The principal’s lists for fifth through eighth grades recognized students achieving high academic standards. High school honor awards were then announced, spotlighting students across different classes for their accomplishments.
50:33Dr. Preston, the Superintendent, concluded the event by expressing gratitude and reflecting on the dedication of staff and students. He emphasized the lasting impact of retiring educators: “You’ve left a mark on your fellow colleagues…your impact will live for many years on students,” underscoring the importance of continued growth and the potential for future achievements among the students.
