Pitman School District Eyes Overhaul of Business Academy and Infrastructure Upgrades
- Meeting Overview:
At a recent Pitman Board of Education meeting, discussions revolved around the restructuring of the Pitman High School Business Academy and updates on various infrastructure projects funded by a recent referendum. The meeting also addressed changes in Chromebook insurance policy to alleviate financial burdens on families, as well as the introduction of new staff members.
One item at the meeting centered on the comprehensive restructuring of the Business Academy at Pitman High School. The academy is shifting to a semester model, allowing students to take courses such as Accounting One and Accounting Two in different semesters of their sophomore year, rather than spanning them over two years. This change ensures students can earn necessary credits without extending the course duration. The new curriculum structure enables students to earn up to 24 credits from Salem Community College and 21 credits from Rowan College of South Jersey (RCSJ), potentially graduating high school with an associate degree. This adjustment aims to provide students a head start towards a business administration degree from Rowan University.
Concerns were raised about previous course structures, where students took two years to earn only three credits. The revised model maintains foundational courses like Intro to Business. Plans are in place to support current students who may have fallen behind with individualized plans tailored to their needs.
Infrastructure projects were another focal point, with updates provided on ongoing construction and renovation efforts. Work includes drainage improvements for the junior-senior high school track, reconstruction of the auditorium event parking lot, roof replacements, and enhancements to secure vestibules at various schools. The timeline for these projects was clarified, with roof work expected to extend into the fall, scheduled to avoid school hours to minimize disruption. The track’s reconstruction is on schedule for an end-of-October completion. Additionally, the high school’s main entrance renovations and the implementation of bullet-resistant glass in interior doors are set to enhance security, with completion expected by mid to late September.
Financial considerations were highlighted as discussions turned to the mandatory insurance for student Chromebooks. Previously costing $35 per student, the insurance fee is now proposed to be reduced to $15 per student, with a family maximum of $45. This change aims to increase accessibility for parents and ensure students have necessary technology. The policy requires insurance payment for students to receive a Chromebook, with exceptions considered for special circumstances. This initiative aligns with a broader strategy to maintain a fresh supply of technology, as the district annually adds three grade levels of Chromebooks to meet educational standards. Despite decreased funding for such initiatives, the district’s in-house tech department’s efficiency has minimized repair costs and turnaround time, often returning devices the next day.
The meeting also introduced new staff members, including special education teacher Miss Chelsea Fall, who joins Pitman Elementary School with 13 years of experience in curriculum development and IEP design. Miss Regina Shannon was introduced as a new preschool teacher at Memorial School, bringing a strong academic background in early childhood education. Miss Paige Blake, a part-time instructional aide, and Miss Valerie Hustler, a long-term substitute at PEES, were also acknowledged for their roles.
