- Meeting Overview:
The Pleasantville City Council meeting on August 5, 2024, saw the approval of a new cannabis business, discussions on significant playground renovations, and amendments to local traffic ordinances. These decisions were made amidst various other resolutions and public comments.
One of the most newsworthy topics was the approval of Resolution 126, which supports the establishment of a cannabis business, “La Wellness Incorporated.” This decision was made without any opposition during the council meeting.
The council also spent considerable time discussing the condition of the city’s playgrounds. Concerns were raised about the state of maintenance compared to neighboring communities. A speaker emphasized the need for Pleasantville to invest in recreational infrastructure, highlighting that the city’s facilities lag behind those in nearby areas like Norwalk. The council acknowledged these concerns, and the mayor stated that bids had been received for significant playground repairs. However, these bids exceeded the city’s estimates by $100,000, prompting the decision to reject them and negotiate with contractors. The planned improvements include new sports facilities and equipment, which aim to enhance the community’s recreational spaces.
Another topic was the Gy Road Park Avenue project. A resident expressed frustration regarding the delay in sidewalk completion and access issues to their property. They noted that there was no driveway apron left for entry and highlighted unresolved drainage issues. The resident requested contact information to escalate their concerns. This dialogue underscores ongoing challenges in public works and the importance of timely project completion.
Tim Jones, a resident, addressed the council about budgetary concerns, particularly the allocation of funds towards police and fire services. He referenced manpower studies conducted by Stockton University and the New Jersey Department of Community Affairs, calling for a public hearing on their findings. Jones argued that the community needs to understand resource allocation better, especially given recent tax increases. He urged the council to host this hearing to ensure transparency and accountability in how funds are utilized. The council chairman responded by clarifying that they had only received the Stockton study but assured that a public safety meeting would be held to discuss the situation.
The meeting also included a ceremony to welcome firefighter Ty G, a recent graduate of the academy. Ty expressed gratitude towards the council and the mayor for their support and emphasized his eagerness to join the fire department.
In addition to these discussions, the council reviewed several other resolutions. Resolution 127 authorized the city clerk to execute a federal aid agreement with the New Jersey Department of Transportation. This agreement aims to upgrade sidewalks and pedestrian crossings around local schools, and the council noted that it was one of the largest awards granted to Atlantic County.
Resolutions 128 and 129 involved memorandums of understanding with the International Association of Firefighters, Local 4929 and Local 2616, respectively. Both resolutions were approved without opposition.
Resolution 130 authorized the assignment of municipal lien certificates to Admin Leans Ops LLC, also passed without questions. Furthermore, Resolution concerned the execution of a second amendment to the Redevelopment Agreement with Savage Collaborations LLC regarding the California Avenue Redevelopment Plan. During this discussion, the Redevelopment Coordinator provided an update on the land clearing and the developer’s progress in obtaining necessary permits. The council member inquired about the use of this approach in other city projects, and the Redevelopment Coordinator confirmed that a similar process had been utilized for the City Center project.
The council also addressed roadwork issues on Tunis Avenue and Princeton Avenue, where water seepage had raised concerns about road integrity. Engineers identified the issue and constructed a test pit to manage the natural water flow, preventing further damage. The council clarified that the situation did not fall under warranty coverage due to unforeseen underground water flows.
Towards the end of the meeting, a new acting business administrator, Kenya Nunes, introduced herself and expressed enthusiasm for her return to Pleasantville after a decade. She emphasized her commitment to engaging with the community.
In public comments, the mayor acknowledged ongoing playground repairs and highlighted upcoming community events. These include a fireworks event at the Marina and National Night Out, designed to foster community engagement and safety.
