- Meeting Overview:
In a recent meeting of the Pleasantville School Board, developments included the announcement of a partnership with Stockton University aimed at enhancing college preparedness for students and the superintendent’s report on positive district-wide updates. Other issues discussed at the meeting were concerns raised by the Pleasantville Education Association (PEA) about staff losses in special education, facility maintenance worries, and the superintendent’s evaluation process.
The superintendent shared details of two notable partnerships. The first was a Saturday Academy and summer enrichment program that provides transportation, meals, and stipends for student participants. The second was a collaboration with Stockton University through the Dual Path Partnership, which guarantees university admission for seventh graders in the district. This initiative is poised to address learning gaps that have emerged during the pandemic and support students in the college application process. Dr. Robert Hinrich from Stockton University elaborated on the partnership, explaining its focus on college preparedness for students in grades 7 through 12. These programs underscore an investment in the educational and future career paths of Pleasantville students.
Additionally, a celebration of achievements took center stage as students from Washington Avenue School, North Main, South Main, and Leeds Avenue School were recognized for their accomplishments. The meeting also honored several teachers and staff members for their dedication and contributions to the school community. The superintendent underscored the importance of acknowledging the collective efforts that contribute to student education.
Michelle Kennedy from the New Jersey School Boards Association, despite being delayed due to a car accident, presented later in the meeting to discuss the superintendent evaluation process. She reviewed the legal requirements and Quality Annual Assurance Continuum (QAC) guidelines that must be met, including the July 1 deadline. Kennedy outlined the six standards of the evaluation tool, which cover mission, vision, core values, operations management, curriculum/instruction, and professional capacity. She described the evaluation as a year-round endeavor, prompting the board to gather evidence consistently and engage in open communication with the superintendent.
During the meeting, the board addressed a range of operational matters, including the treasurer’s report and discussions on finance, transportation, facilities, human resources, and curricular and instructional issues. Notable discrepancies in the school calendar and graduation dates were brought up. Additionally, a motion was passed to enter a closed session to deliberate on personnel matters and pending litigation.
In the public comments section, the PEA voiced concerns over the recent loss of a special education teacher and paraprofessional, requesting a meeting with the director of special services. Concerns regarding the high school gymnasium’s leaking roof and unsafe conditions for the athletics department were raised by Mrs. Persona Noel. Following the closed session, the board took action on various items, including approving the superintendent’s recommendation to accept the Harassment, Intimidation, and Bullying (HIB) report for March and April, and the determination of a specific employee’s status.
Access issues to the football field and track were brought up by a community member, while the vice president of the Pleasantville Junior Joker football organization sought approval for a school meet-and-greet event. A PA executive team representative requested a meeting with the superintendent to discuss staff safety concerns. Additionally, the newly appointed vice president for support staff stressed the need for open communication and highlighted the fear staff members have in voicing complaints. A community member also highlighted perceived biases and acrimony among staff, calling for increased education and collaboration.
Board members expressed their gratitude towards the superintendent’s efforts and acknowledged the complexities involved in decision-making. The meeting concluded with a motion to adjourn, which was carried.
