Pleasantville School Board Confronts Safety and Staff Concerns
- Meeting Overview:
During the recent Pleasantville School Board meeting, issues surrounding student safety, facility conditions, and personnel matters took precedence. The assembly was marked by significant engagement from the public, detailed presentations by the superintendent, and recognition of student and staff achievements.
Superintendent Dr. Marilyn Martinez presented the student safety data system incidence report, a comprehensive account of incidents across various categories and schools. This report was central to the meeting, as it highlighted the number of incidents and the professional development and security measures taken in response. Dr. Martinez acknowledged the efforts in building partnerships with the Multicultural Fair, the Junior JROTC military ball, and the Leading with Enrichment Alternatives and Diversion initiative, aimed at supporting students and their families. Additionally, the superintendent recognized the top performing students of Pleasantville High School and the middle school class of 2024, along with achievers from South Main Street School, Leeds Avenue School, and North Main Street School.
Public comments also played a role, with several community members voicing their concerns and opinions. One individual discussed the termination from a security guard position, alleging mistreatment and lack of training. Concerns about the lack of staff bathrooms at the middle school were also raised, highlighting a potential violation of OSHA regulations and the difficulty staff faced in accessing restrooms during short breaks. The lack of clarity in proposed policy changes led to a motion being tabled, while debates ensued over a motion connected to a charter school.
The meeting also addressed a complaint about nepotism in the hiring process for the Middle School principal. A board member responded to the allegations, emphasizing the need for accurate information and transparency. Moreover, several community members, including Jonathan Diego and Victor Camaro, expressed support for Dr. Martinez and the board’s focus on student health, safety, and welfare.
Mrs. Priscilla Noel, a participant in the public comments segment, addressed multiple agenda items. She inquired about mold assessment in the roof repair project and commended the board for the website redesign and its improved accessibility. Her concerns extended to the quality of school lunches, specifically citing the use of Blue #40 dye. Noel also supported the timely hiring of coaches, particularly endorsing a basketball coach candidate with an impressive resume.
Employee and student recognitions were a positive highlight, with several students from North M Street School and Washington Elementary School acknowledged for their academic and extracurricular accomplishments. The high school celebrated students’ success in sports, such as track, volleyball, and baseball. Employees of the month, including teachers and a bus driver, were also honored.
The board approved various motions, including the H report and a special education matter settlement. Resolutions were passed for increment withholding for an employee and a transfer to Pleasantville High School. An executive session was held to discuss personal and student matters, as well as attorney-client privilege issues.
