Pleasantville School Board Faces Teacher Transfer Controversy Amid Staff and Community Protests
- Meeting Overview:
The Pleasantville School Board meeting on June 10, 2025, was marked by discussion and community involvement, with focus on the proposed transfers of key staff members, including long-serving guidance counselors, and the handling of several grievances related to staff compensation and school operations.
A substantial portion of the meeting was dedicated to public comments regarding the proposed transfer of Mark Santelo, a guidance counselor with 30 years of service at North Main Street School. Brian Kavanagh, a fourth-grade teacher, voiced confusion and concern over Santelo’s transfer to the high school. He highlighted Santelo’s integral role in the school community and his contribution to improved academic performance. Kavanagh pleaded with the board to reconsider, emphasizing that “North Main needs Mark Santelo.”
Santelo himself addressed the board, reflecting on the relationships he had built with students and their families over the years.
Support for retaining guidance counselors in their current positions was echoed by George Murray, a teacher at Pleasantville High School, who defended Michelle Cooper, another counselor facing reassignment. Murray described Cooper’s role as critical, citing her management of scholarships and her understanding of state laws. He presented a petition signed by 44 staff members advocating for Cooper’s retention.
Students also participated in the discussion. Juan Cast, a senior at Pleasantville High School, shared personal testimony about Cooper’s impact, questioning the decision to transfer her and presenting a petition from students in support of her. The transfer of guidance counselor Miss Miller was similarly protested by students, who expressed deep emotional connections and concerns over her potential departure.
The meeting also addressed several grievances that had reached level three. One grievance concerned the lack of compensation for Pre-K teachers who lost prep and planning time due to supervising students beyond school hours. The issue arose from delays caused by parent tardiness and bus scheduling problems, leaving teachers without overtime pay since November. Another grievance involved non-compliance with the recognition clause of the collective bargaining agreement, affecting discussions about new hires and job titles between the board and the Pleasantville Education Association (PEA). Further grievances related to salary discrepancies for staff with advanced educational qualifications.
Christina Sneed, a PAR professional, voiced concerns about resolutions on the agenda, particularly those related to the district mentoring program and the comprehensive equity plan. Sneed questioned the lack of transparency and availability of these documents for staff and parent review.
Amidst the administrative and operational challenges, the meeting also celebrated student achievements. The board recognized top students from Pleasantville High School and the middle school, with particular mention of athletic successes. Isabella Alvarez and Germaine Nelson were highlighted for their accomplishments in track and field, while the 4×400 meter relay team secured a third-place finish in a significant meet.
The superintendent, Dr. Marilyn Martinez, reported on the district’s achievements, noting a decrease in violence incidents and celebrating academic excellence among students. The report included a mention of the Pleasantville High School JROTC’s participation in a military ball and the upcoming commencement ceremonies.
The meeting concluded with a discussion of routine administrative matters, including the approval of financial items and human resources decisions. Two addendums related to long-range facility plans for a new pre-kindergarten school were approved, addressing parking lot requirements for the middle and high school.
Kathy Watson, president of the Pleasantville Education Association, addressed the board during public comments, expressing concerns about communication issues with the superintendent and urging for improved dialogue and collaboration. Board members responded by acknowledging these concerns and emphasizing efforts to advance the district’s progress.
