- Meeting Overview:
In a recent Pleasantville City Council meeting, one notable issue emerged from the community’s need for a dedicated meeting place for seniors. Missy Thompson from the local chapter of the NAACP highlighted the plight of older residents who currently lack a permanent venue for socialization and activities. The council also tackled various infrastructure projects, the transfer of a liquor license, and the welcoming back of Officer Mark Mard.
Missy Thompson’s appeal to the council underscored the difficulties seniors face in finding a consistent location for meetings and recreational activities. She reported that the high school and the library had been used intermittently but were not without problems, including pushback and unsuitability for the senior environment. Thompson’s statement, “We need a place here in Pleasantville for the seniors to meet,” encapsulated the sentiment of the senior community and the NAACP’s push for municipal support in securing an appropriate venue.
Infrastructure updates were also prominent in the meeting. A report detailed progress on multiple fronts, including Pump Station improvements, generator installation at the recreation center, and drainage enhancements at Walnut Avenue Park. Bids for refurbishing tennis and basketball courts were under consideration, and updates on streetcape improvements on Black Horse Pike, Old Turnpike, and Ridgewood and Claus Avenues were provided. The council discussed municipal aid grant applications and grant agreements with the New Jersey Department of Transportation, covering projects like Ansley Decator and Dowy roadworks and the ongoing Unity Park construction.
The issue of liquor license transfers was addressed with specific reference to Ceda Liquor Market LLC. Clarification was sought on the process, emphasizing that the transfer pertained to the license alone, rather than being tied to a location. This prompted inquiries about the prospective site for the business and the steps required for approval.
Concerns over campaign sign removal deadlines were raised, alongside queries about the terms of rent and tenancy. The discussion honed in on landlords’ expectations for tenants to fund renovations to properties to meet code requirements, a practice met with council disapproval. Additionally, council members discussed the state of playgrounds, grass maintenance, and the necessity of resurfacing tennis courts.
The meeting encompassed a series of resolutions, including the appointment of special law enforcement officers, amendments to regulations for mobile retail food businesses, and the renewal of various public licenses. In a gesture of reintegration, Officer Mark Mard was formally welcomed back to duty, with members expressing their gratitude before a motion to adjourn concluded the session.
