Plymouth School Committee Celebrates Robert Morgan’s 15-Year Legacy and Approves Student Trip to Walt Disney World
- Meeting Overview:
At the recent Plymouth School Committee meeting, the board recognized the extensive contributions of Robert Morgan, an outgoing member with 15 years of service, while also approving a significant student trip to Walt Disney World.
One item at the meeting was the tribute to Robert Morgan, whose dedication to the Plymouth School Committee spanned over a decade and a half. His service was acknowledged by multiple representatives and members, who emphasized the lasting impact of his initiatives on the district. Representative Michelle Badger attended the meeting to honor Morgan’s contributions, noting his involvement in critical programs like full-day kindergarten and the biomedical program. A citation from the Massachusetts House of Representatives and another from the Massachusetts Senate were presented to Morgan, recognizing his exceptional leadership and commitment. Other committee members echoed these sentiments, praising his consistent presence and participation in meetings and initiatives that transformed the district. A plaque was awarded to Morgan.
Morgan, reflecting on his tenure, shared how his journey began with a desire to volunteer after moving to Plymouth in 2000. He expressed gratitude towards fellow board members and acknowledged the support of his family throughout his extensive meeting schedule.
Following the recognition of Morgan’s service, the committee discussed an exciting opportunity for students: a trip to Walt Disney World. Scheduled for August 15th through 19th, the trip will involve students from the concert and marching bands, as well as the orchestra. The committee emphasized making the trip affordable, allowing families to spread payments over ten months, and highlighted the inclusion of fundraising opportunities aimed at reducing costs for families. Financial assistance will be available for those in need. The trip will feature performances by the orchestra and the marching band in high-profile venues, promising a memorable experience for the students involved.
In addition to these headline events, the meeting covered several school improvement initiatives. The committee discussed the final year of the current school improvement plan, focusing on integrating social-emotional learning within the school culture to promote diversity and inclusion. The plan also emphasized strong partnerships with parents, families, and community organizations to support students and foster a welcoming environment for all.
The meeting also highlighted various extracurricular activities and achievements within the schools. Notable events included the successful first annual arts night and the grade five wax museum, where students portrayed historical figures, engaging families and promoting historical understanding.
Academic performance updates revealed positive trends, with an increase in students exceeding expectations in English Language Arts and mathematics, surpassing district and state averages. The school also reported a significant drop in students not meeting expectations in these areas. Extracurricular clubs and programs, such as the Big Brother Big Sister program and the Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS) system, continued to engage students and reinforce positive behavior.
The committee further discussed community engagement efforts, including family events and initiatives like the scholarship swap, which raised over $3,000 for a scholarship fund supporting students who embody core values. The role of the PTA was praised for its support in fundraising and organizing school events, contributing to a vibrant school community.
The meeting concluded with updates on ongoing projects, including a school renovation and the installation of new playground equipment designed for community use. Security enhancements and improvements to the school’s facilities were also noted, supporting a safe and comfortable learning environment.
