Plymouth South High School Secures $678,000 Grant for Clean Energy Education
- Meeting Overview:
The Plymouth School Committee meeting highlighted an impressive financial boost for Plymouth South High School, which secured a $678,000 state grant aimed at preparing students for careers in clean energy. The funds will be used to acquire necessary equipment, create lab spaces, and provide teacher training.
In addition to the grant announcement, the meeting celebrated the accomplishments of students participating in the summer Freckle math program. Dr. Patinis reported that over 350 students engaged in more than 21,000 minutes of math practice. The program, which serves grades 1 through 8, aims to mitigate learning loss during summer breaks. A standout student achieved over 900 minutes of math practice, earning special recognition and a bowling prize. The celebratory atmosphere included gift bags from local sponsors for participants.
The committee also acknowledged the successful fundraising efforts by Plymouth South High School’s staff and field hockey team, which raised $1,226.59 for breast cancer awareness through a Pink Out event. Principal Patricia Fry expressed gratitude for the community’s involvement in this initiative.
Student representatives from both Plymouth North and South High Schools provided updates on various school activities, emphasizing student engagement and achievement. Anna, representing Plymouth North, highlighted the success of a craft fair featuring over 100 handmade crafters, and eight student athletes were selected to attend a leadership summit at Gillette Stadium. Lily, from Plymouth South, discussed preparations for Spirit Week, the Powderpuff game, and the upcoming annual turkey basket drive to support families in need during Thanksgiving. She also mentioned the success of the fourth annual horror fest and the Mega Bowl, a unified basketball event scheduled for November 7, fostering school spirit and community involvement.
The facilities department’s presentation by Matt Derky shed light on operational challenges, particularly the financial constraints imposed by aging infrastructure. With some buildings over 100 years old, maintaining safe and functional facilities remains a priority. Rising costs for materials and labor, especially for HVAC systems, were highlighted as significant hurdles.
Budget discussions were also central to the meeting, with the committee focusing on potential funding shortfalls and the need for rigorous analysis of budget line items. Efforts to communicate the budget process to the community included the creation of six short video sessions, supported by Ed TV, to demystify the financial planning and allocation process. Additionally, a transportation study is underway to evaluate current routes and expenditures, with the possibility of seeking new bids for future contracts.
