- Meeting Overview:
In a move, the Pompton Lakes Redevelopment Agency has authorized the execution of a redevelopment agreement that paves the way for a new senior veterans housing project on Ringwood Avenue.
The senior veterans housing project garnered considerable attention during the meeting, with discussions on the specifics of the development, including the number of residential units, parking availability, and the construction timeline. The applicant asserted that the project aligned with both the Redevelopment Plan and the Long-Term Tax Exemption Ordinance, emphasizing compliance and benefits to the borough. Agency members inquired about various aspects of the project, such as the incorporation of a walking path, landscaping details, and the non-profit status of the managing organization. The use of low-income housing tax credits and the structure of the annual service charge were also topics of clarification and discussion.
The meeting also touched on the potential redevelopment of a property at One Cannonball Road, where the owner proposed converting attic space into one or two additional apartments. The discourse centered on the alterations to the building’s exterior, potential parking challenges, and the need to maintain consistency with the aesthetic of the redevelopment area. Key considerations included the impact on current tenants and the surrounding neighborhood. After a debate, the proposal was deferred for further review and possible inclusion in the redevelopment area.
In addition to the housing developments, the meeting addressed an administrative change within the agency. It was determined that the position of the executive director, currently filled by a consultant, should transition to an employee role. This change necessitates a new hiring process, despite concerns over the financial implications and the rationale behind reinitiating the hiring procedure while the present director is still engaged. A resolution was passed to officially relieve the executive director of his duties and begin the process of advertising for a new hire.
Other topics during the meeting included an ordinance related to the recycling center operation and tax-exempt property tax payments, as well as updates on ongoing projects, such as the yet-to-start construction on Oneida Avenue and the necessary amendment to the real plan for Pompton Plaza. Notably, the agency discussed a meeting with Seven Equities Partners, a potential redeveloper showing interest in opportunities within Pompton Lakes.
The meeting also celebrated Pompton Lakes’ allure through a bid advertisement in a magazine, promoting the town as an attractive destination. Moreover, progress was noted on the terms for a redevelopment agreement with Meridia and the Civic Center, which will feature a new women’s locker room and the removal of a trailer.
