- Meeting Overview:
In a recent meeting of the Pompton Lakes Borough Council, the discussion focused on community concerns surrounding student safety, local development, and environmental issues. The Council addressed a series of resolutions aimed at improving the borough’s infrastructure and living conditions, including measures for safer school commutes, flood prevention, and enhancement of the local economy.
One of the primary concerns brought up by a community member, Michael Serra, was the safety of students who do not use designated crosswalks, creating hazards for both pedestrians and drivers. In response, the Council considered an assembly to educate students on the importance of using crosswalks for their safety and to ensure smoother traffic flow.
Further addressing student safety, a resolution was presented to introduce student IDs for authorized entry into all entrances of Pompton Lakes High School. This measure aims to reduce lateness and streamline access for students, particularly those who have to park across the school and walk around the building to enter.
The Council moved to resolve local development issues, such as the proposal to purchase a section of St. Mary’s parking lot to alleviate parking congestion at Pompton Lakes High School, potentially providing additional parking for teachers and freeing up space for residents of new apartments in the area.
An initiative to improve local storefronts on Wanaque Avenue was also discussed. This resolution aimed to attract business and revenue by renovating storefronts and installing additional bike racks to accommodate the increasing number of cyclists.
Additionally, the Council addressed environmental concerns by proposing the planting of willow trees along the Pequannock River. This initiative is intended to prevent further land erosion and manage flooding, which has been an issue in Pompton Lakes due to deer consuming underbrush and destabilizing riverbanks.
