Port Orange Planning Commission Approves New Retail Nursery and Garden Supplies Facility
- Meeting Overview:
In a recent session, the Port Orange Planning Commission approved a special exception for a new retail nursery and garden supplies facility, which will be located on the south side of Fern Park Drive. The meeting also included the election of new officers, with Scott Sager appointed as chair and Stan Schmidt as vice chair.
The commission’s primary focus was on the application for a special exception to enable the operation of a retail and wholesale nursery within the agricultural zoning district. The proposed facility will be established on the west half of a 9.37-acre property, where the owners plan to demolish an existing, dilapidated home to make way for the business. The property owners currently operate Prices Dirt and Mulch across the street and intend to relocate their business while also constructing a new residence on the site.
The facility will include a fenced outdoor area for plants and mulch, complemented by a 400-square-foot office building. Access will be facilitated through a shared drive with the neighboring allboard storage development. The planning staff confirmed that the proposal meets the special exception criteria outlined in the land development code, leading to the commission’s approval.
The meeting proceeded with the election of new officers, delayed from a previous month. Scott Sager was nominated and appointed as chair, while Stan Schmidt was elected vice chair. The process concluded with a vote by acclamation.
There was also light-hearted discussion about the existing house on the property, currently occupied by wildlife, which will be replaced by modern, functional structures.
