Port Richey Council Discusses Park Developments, Community Engagement, and Future Events
- Meeting Overview:
At the recent Port Richey City Council meeting, discussions centered around the proposed developments at the city’s parks, with an emphasis on Brasher Park, and the planning of various community events aimed at fostering civic engagement. Key topics included potential enhancements at local parks, the scheduling of upcoming festivals, and initiatives to strengthen community ties.
The council gave considerable attention to developments at Brasher Park, where plans are underway for significant improvements. These include the construction of a soft kayak launch, a boardwalk along the water, and fishing docks on both the north and south sides. Concerns were raised regarding parking availability, as the council acknowledged the limited space at Brasher Park. Funding for these projects was discussed, with the Community Redevelopment Agency (CRA) identified as a potential source. The council considered the feasibility of relocating the boat ramp at Nick’s Park to a county property on Ebide.
Beyond Brasher Park, Olsen Park was another focal point, particularly the potential acquisition of a neighboring 34-acre property listed at $4.99 million. The council explored funding options through the county, especially for properties affected by flooding. The idea was to use the land to address local youth needs by providing a constructive space for activities, thereby benefiting the community.
There was also enthusiasm for the artistic enhancement of the bathroom wall at Olsen Park. Artists who had previously submitted proposals for a larger wall were contacted to provide mockups for the bathroom wall, with a consensus to reconvene in a month to review the designs.
In addition to park developments, the council discussed upcoming community events. The seafood festival scheduled for March 14th will feature a fishing tournament, kite surfing, and live music from 2:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. Approximately 40 vendors have already registered for the event, which is expected to draw a turnout. Other events on the horizon include a mayor’s ball on September 11th and Boom on the Bayou on June 28th, which will feature fireworks similar to those used during the centennial celebration.
The “Meet Your Neighbor” initiative was another topic of discussion, with plans to hold these events every other month. Collaborations with the chamber’s existing happy hour events were suggested as a way to increase participation and highlight local businesses. The council also considered expanding these events to bi-monthly or even monthly to further engage the community.
A community clean-up effort was proposed for March 7th at Waterfront Park, with coffee and donuts provided to volunteers. The council emphasized the need for residents to bring gloves, while the city would supply garbage bags. This initiative aims to complement the city’s festival preparations and encourage civic responsibility among residents.
Long-term community goals were briefly touched upon, including the potential establishment of a recreation center and the continuation of past initiatives like community gardens. The council discussed the importance of social media in keeping the community informed and engaged.
