Following this, the board turned its attention to celebrating the ten-year anniversary of the Dual Language Immersion (DLI) program. Mrs. Russell, the world language supervisor, reported on the program’s progress and challenges. The DLI program, which started with its first cohort now entering tenth grade, has seen students advance to taking advanced placement Spanish courses. However, the program faced hurdles, including the need to adjust following the loss of one of its two courses due to a teacher’s leave. Despite these challenges, the program has maintained strong enrollment, particularly in Community Park’s fifth-grade classes, though concerns persist regarding the fourth-grade classes and kindergarten enrollment. Mrs. Russell highlighted the desire for expansion, increased Spanish instruction during the school day, and the continuation of Spanish language social studies classes at the middle school. The administration is optimistic about future hiring efforts to sustain and grow the program.

The meeting also featured an update on the district’s construction projects, funded by the January 2022 and November 2023 referendums. A board member presented visual updates, noting the progress of roofing projects at the high school and middle school, which are approximately 85 to 90 percent complete. The new white roofs are expected to be more sustainable during warmer seasons. Other updates included ongoing work on lighting projects in the middle school, cafeteria renovations at the high school, and athletic training room upgrades. Supply chain issues have delayed some projects, such as a rooftop HVAC unit expected by the end of September. The policy will establish boundaries for students’ use of AI in assignments, addressing issues such as bias, copyright infringement, and inaccuracies. The framework for AI assignments will categorize them based on levels of acceptable AI involvement. The district plans to move forward with School AI, pending board approval, and will not use other tools until the policy is established. A task force will be formed to evaluate the district’s approach and professional development opportunities throughout the year. Communication strategies, including newsletters and webinars, will inform families about AI’s implications for education.

The meeting also addressed concerns about the Aftercare program, which has faced staffing challenges. A participant noted the current enrollment numbers and suggested a collaborative approach to temporarily assist with staffing due to last-minute resignations by YW employees. The urgency of the situation was highlighted, with school starting in five days.
