Ramsey Borough Council Celebrates Police Heroism, Approves Parking Ordinance
- Meeting Overview:
The Ramsey Borough Council meeting on May 28, 2025, was marked by a series of significant events, including the recognition of outstanding police service, the passage of a new parking ordinance to alleviate congestion issues, and the appointment of new members to local emergency services. The council also discussed updates on community projects and upcoming events.
07:53The meeting began with a focus on law enforcement as Chief Longman introduced Joseph Faithfully, a probationary police officer, commending his qualities and experience. The council then honored several officers for their exemplary service. Notably, the Life Medal was awarded to a patrolwoman for her life-saving actions during a medical emergency involving an unresponsive individual named Russell Marana. With assistance from a bystander, William Kelly, the officer’s quick response and use of CPR and an AED contributed to Marana’s recovery.
In addition to the Life Medal, Detective Sergeant Garcia received the Exceptional Duty Medal for his leadership in the detective bureau, and Patrolmen Finn Riley and Zindaki were awarded the Honorable Service Medal for their respective acts of bravery. Riley was recognized for his swift actions during a vehicle crash that involved a ruptured gas line. Zindaki was commended for safely managing a situation involving a firearm during a vehicle stop, resulting in the arrest of individuals illegally possessing a handgun.
The council also acknowledged the contributions of K9 officers Hammer and Jack, despite their absence, for their roles in drug-related arrests and community outreach. The Mayor expressed gratitude to the officers for their service and recognized the council’s support in conducting the awards ceremony during the meeting.
26:48Following the recognition of police service, the council addressed the adoption of Ordinance 11-2025, which modifies parking regulations by prohibiting street parking on certain roads from May 15th to September 15th. This ordinance aims to reduce congestion caused by visitors to Darlington. With no public objections during the hearing, the ordinance was unanimously adopted.
31:55In other developments, the council made appointments to local emergency services. Samantha Aerson was appointed to the Junior Fire Brigade, and Kevin Morris to the Ramsey Rescue Squad. These appointments were expedited to ensure Aerson would not face unnecessary delays in joining the brigade.
29:40The meeting also covered various community initiatives and updates. The library board announced the kickoff of its annual summer reading program on June 29, along with a writing contest for young students. Plans for recreational activities were discussed, including a home run derby and the ongoing Ramsey Run, scheduled for September 20.
On the public safety front, the council acknowledged ongoing evaluations of the Ramsey Emergency Services Complex project, with a focus on staying within budget amidst rising costs. This project is under further review before its presentation to the council and public.
34:49The council discussed water quality, noting no violations for 2024 and announcing the distribution of a Consumer Confidence Report postcard to residents. Collaboration with H2M, an architectural and engineering firm, continues to address water quality issues, particularly concerning PFAS contamination. Efforts to obtain funding from the New Jersey Infrastructure Bank for related projects were also highlighted.
50:51Additionally, the council introduced Ordinance 13205, which amends regulations for tennis and pickleball courts, including exclusive time slots for Ramsey residents and measures to manage noise levels. Future ordinances under consideration include a lead service line ordinance and proposals addressing retiree health insurance and parking on private property.
