- Meeting Overview:
The Ramsey Borough Council recently addressed community issues, including the welfare of animals and infrastructure enhancements. A resident’s appeal to ban sales from puppy mills took center stage, while approvals for public events and improvement projects were also key points of discussion.
During the public comments segment of the meeting, the welfare of animals was at the forefront as a Clifton resident, Richard Jety, urged the council to take a definitive stand against puppy mills. Jety detailed the distressing conditions and the suffering animals endure in such environments. He also highlighted the increasing number of municipalities that have enacted bans on the sale of animals from puppy mills. In response, Councilwoman Jane Woods acknowledged the issue’s urgency.
Following the issue of animal welfare, the council approved a special permit for the Ramsey Public Education Foundation, allowing the placement of signs advertising their forthcoming 5K run and family fun event. Councilman Michael Gutwetter remarked on the signs already visible around the town, signaling council support for local community events.
Infrastructure projects were also a critical focus of the meeting. Councilman Gutwetter reported on the Ramsey Library’s HVAC renovation project nearing completion. He shed light on upcoming community engagements, including a book and jewelry sale and the annual Library Con event.
Council President Peter Kilman provided updates on the VFW’s annual poppy sale, earmarking the period from May 1st to June 30th for fundraising activities across the borough’s retail locations. Such efforts underscore the council’s support for veterans’ organizations and their charitable causes.
The council executed several consent resolutions during the meeting. These included the appointment of Anthony Escolano to the Ramsey Fire Department. A final ordinance was passed, authorizing the issuance of bonds to finance various public improvements.
Updates on Ramsey’s Emergency Services complex were also shared, noting that the project is still in the design phase with bidding expected in the latter part of 2024. The council extended congratulations to Escolano on his fire department appointment and acknowledged the success of the “Coffee with the Mayor and Council” event, coordinated by Councilwoman Sara Poppe.
Additional updates included the Design Review Board’s approval for the Mayfield Cafe application, and discussions by the Senior Trustees Board regarding new installations and upcoming events, such as the Senior Gala in June. The Zoning Board of Adjustment meeting was canceled, but the council took the opportunity to remind residents about avenues for lodging complaints concerning increased air traffic.
In matters concerning public utilities and the environment, the council reviewed the EPA’s revised water quality standards for drinking water. The Public and Governmental Relations report highlighted the Ramsey Municipal Alliance’s initiatives and upcoming events, which include therapy dog visits and police meet-and-greets.
Moreover, the Health, Education, and Social Services report touched on community events like karaoke night and Challenger softball.
