Raritan Planning Board Discusses Online Publication Laws and Resident Concerns Over Local Construction
- Meeting Overview:
During the recent Raritan Planning Board meeting, members discussed the implications of the new state bill extending the use of online publications for public notices and addressed a resident’s concerns about a nearby construction project. The meeting also included routine administrative updates and a postponement of a application.
The discussion about public notices arose in light of the closure of traditional newspapers like the Star Ledger. Board members explained that the state bill, originally set to expire soon, has been extended to December 31, 2025. This legislation allows municipalities to publish notices online, substituting paper publications. The board expressed aspirations to eventually allow municipalities to advertise solely on their own websites, stating that it would streamline access to local information. A board member noted, “If you want to know what’s going on in Raritan Township, you go to the Raritan Township website.”
Another topic was the concern raised by a resident about a construction project near her property. She reported that she and her neighbor only learned about the planned road or driveway construction through a construction team, without prior notification. The resident sought clarity on the project’s nature and potential environmental impacts, particularly regarding stormwater drainage affecting her property. While the Planning Board explained that the issue falls under the jurisdiction of the Board of Adjustment, they advised the resident to consult a land use attorney for guidance and to attend the Board of Adjustment meeting for further discussion.
Additionally, the board postponed the application for Flemington Concrete Products LLC to the next meeting on March 26, without requiring additional notice. Meanwhile, the board secretary confirmed that an extension was granted for the Diamond Nation LLC application decision, now extended to March 31, 2025.
