- Meeting Overview:
In a recent meeting, the Reading Board of Health focused on the Reading Community Health Improvement Plan, a comprehensive strategy addressing preventive health screenings and treatment services, healthy environments and inclusive programs, and healthy eating and active living. Members of the public raised concerns about the inclusion of older adults in the plan, and the challenges of reaching those needing preventive health services were discussed.
The meeting began with an acknowledgment of the importance of the town’s health improvement plan, which targets critical areas such as chronic diseases, mental health services, and the building of resiliency for youth and young adults. Emphasizing the need for feedback and suggestions, the public hearing aimed to refine the community health improvement plan with a focus on actionable steps.
Jamie Hickey from Pierce Associates presented a detailed overview of the year-long process that led to the formation of the plan. This process included a community health needs assessment that utilized various data sources, key leader interviews, focus groups, and a survey. From this comprehensive research, three priority areas were distilled for the community health improvement plan. The primary goal under these areas is to increase awareness and accessibility to preventive healthcare services and promote healthy environments, including inclusive programs that cater to the diverse needs of the community.
The public’s input highlighted a particular concern regarding the aging population. Contributors to the discussion noted that programs designed for older adults do not just benefit this demographic but have a positive impact on the entire community, fostering an environment of inclusivity and support.
Another challenge presented was reaching out to individuals in need of preventive health screening and treatment services. The absence of a local paper was mentioned as a barrier to community-wide communication and information dissemination. This gap in local media highlighted the need for innovative approaches to community outreach and engagement to ensure that critical health information reaches all segments of the population.
The Board also touched upon the technical aspects of conducting the public hearing. There was some initial confusion around the timing of the public comment period and whether RCTV needed to be present for the meeting to proceed. Additionally, the lack of Zoom participation and the necessity of presenting the meeting for public viewing were discussed, given the current climate favoring remote and digital engagement.
As the meeting progressed, it became evident that despite the low physical turnout, the Board was committed to moving forward with the agenda. Dr. Lopez, whose role in the meeting was emphasized, provided an overview of the public hearing’s purpose. The emphasis was on the importance of community feedback and the collaboration and partnership needed across various entities to achieve the goals set out in the health improvement plan.
