- Meeting Overview:
The Reading Conservation Commission recently convened to address key environmental and conservation issues, most notably granting a two-year extension for the Mlett SS Morgan project, a significant conservation and restoration initiative. The project, which has encountered setbacks due to construction delays, weather events, and contaminated sediments, is now 80% complete. Amy Ball and Jen RAB from Horley Whitten Group, representing the project, outlined the progress and future plans, including plantings and invasive species management.
During the meeting, commission members raised concerns about the project’s timeline and the handling of specific issues observed during their site visit. Noted were trees with fungus, a damaged tree, scattered debris, and unfinished installation of amenities. The commission’s discussion also revolved around the removal of erosion control and the presence of debris on-site, with a resolution on the extension request deferred pending further clarification on these concerns.
The debate over the project extension was central to the meeting. Some commissioners advocated for a shorter extension period due to the potential for turnover within the commission and the desire for continuity in project oversight. Despite these concerns, a motion to approve a two-year extension was secondally and approved.
The commission also addressed a violation notice on Main Street, where a homeowner’s pool installation near a wetland was in question. The homeowner proposed moving the pool to a compliant location.
Additionally, the commission discussed the recent success of Porch Fest, a community event that featured 85 bands across 45 sites and attracted attendees from various states. Positive feedback on the venue and performances was reported, prompting discussions on lessons learned and potential improvements for future events.
Another focal point of the meeting was the public engagement and outreach efforts of the commission. The recent events at the cabin and the Pavilion were noted, with over 50 people learning about their availability for use. The addition of two new commission members was mentioned along with the potential creation of a newsletter to keep residents informed about commission activities. The commission debated which email system would be most effective for their outreach, considering the use of MailChimp for email distribution.
