- Meeting Overview:
At the recent Reading Council on Aging meeting, discussions centered on the potential construction of a new Senior Center, outreach efforts to inform senior citizens, and various operational matters. The members considered several topics, including the need for a facility that adequately serves the town’s elderly population, exploring the feasibility of purchasing property from an adjoining town for the new center, and strategizing an outreach campaign to raise awareness about the council’s activities.
One notable issue was the potential construction of a new Senior Center, with members debating whether the focus should be exclusively on seniors or on a broader concept of active living. The discussion included the review of a feasibility study draft by design consultant BH plusa, which recommended the Simon Way site for the new center after evaluating multiple options. Concerns were raised about potential contamination at the proposed site and discussions ensued about the need for a permanent building committee and an owner’s project manager for the project. A comparison with the North Andover senior center was made, with a proposal to measure the facility to inform the design process for the Reading Center for Active Living.
Outreach strategies to engage the senior community were also a focal point of the meeting. Members debated the use of the community cable TV station, RCTV, for broadcasting activities despite concerns over scheduling and viewership monitoring. Ideas such as creating lawn signs and distributing postcards to garner support for the new Senior Center were discussed, though limitations on messaging due to the council’s status as a volunteer organization were noted. The possibility of involving local organizations like the Friends of Reading Seniors or the Lions Club in the outreach campaign was debated, with a comprehensive strategy and timing of the campaign in relation to an upcoming select board decision being key points of discussion.
Operational aspects of the Council on Aging’s activities were addressed, with a successful year reported by the Human Services administrator, Chris, in terms of interactions and activities at the current Senior Center. Upcoming updates to the audiovisual system and the growth in volunteer numbers were highlighted. Financial matters were briefly mentioned, including appreciation for a recent $200 donation and discussions on purchasing a bot set delayed by vendor issues. Additionally, the need for a portable court for a popular game and a suggestion to streamline the reimbursement process by using a town credit card were topics of conversation.
Members shared personal motivations for joining the council and their involvement in senior-related activities. The council also discussed the upcoming COA conference and the importance of setting clear guidelines on reimbursements for such events. Efforts to promote COA activities through RCTV and the inclusion of a summer intern in these efforts were also on the agenda.
The meeting concluded with an agreement to continue discussions about outreach strategies at the next meeting in September and to collect ideas for the campaign. The council plans to maintain focus on the street fair and the location of their booth to maximize engagement with the community.
