Red Bank Planning Board Reviews New Historic Preservation Commission Design Guidelines
- Meeting Overview:
At the recent Red Bank Planning Board meeting, members received a presentation on the newly developed design guidelines from the Historic Preservation Commission (HPC). These guidelines, funded by a grant from the New Jersey Historic Trust, aim to preserve the historic character of Red Bank’s designated districts while allowing flexibility for future development.
Stephen Smalling, presenting virtually, outlined the guidelines designed for Broad Street and Washington Street’s historic districts. The guidelines focus on preserving historical elements, such as slate and cedar shingle roofs, while permitting modern materials that mimic traditional aesthetics. They cover multiple aspects, including exterior cladding, windows, storefronts, and new constructions, promoting adaptive reuse and context-sensitive redevelopment.
The guidelines emphasize that they are not building codes but aim to guide property owners in maintaining the historic character of their properties. They also clarify that the HPC does not review interior modifications and that demolition applications require HPC input before the Planning Board’s final decision. These guidelines are aligned with Red Bank’s master plan and historic preservation objectives.
