- Meeting Overview:
During the recent Gloucester Town Council meeting, residents voiced concerns over the township’s financial management, particularly in relation to the sewer system and the dissolution of the Municipal Utilities Authority (MUA).
The most notable issue involved the $2.6 million surplus in the sewer fund. Residents questioned whether these funds were properly allocated for necessary improvements or reserved for bond obligations. These concerns were raised by several individuals, including Denise Coin, who inquired about the specific allocations from a proposed $585,000 bond ordinance meant for the sewer system. This lack of clarity spurred further questions about whether savings from the MUA’s dissolution were being realized as promised.
Adding to the scrutiny, Dina Hendry pressed for transparency regarding potential taxpayer savings since the authority’s dissolution in May 2023. Hendry highlighted that anticipated capital improvements were substantial. The council acknowledged that annual financial statements were incomplete, leaving questions about the financial benefits and the strategic use of funds unanswered.
The debate over the MUA’s dissolution extended to public commentary, with Ray Pador expressing dissatisfaction with the perceived lack of transparency and accountability. Pador challenged the council’s rationale. He argued that the MUA had operated efficiently, questioning the legitimacy of the decision and its alignment with public interest.
Throughout these discussions, the council attempted to allay concerns by stating that no jobs were lost, and services remained uninterrupted.
Beyond fiscal concerns, the meeting addressed a range of other topics. A heated exchange occurred over the mayor’s toy drive, where an individual identified as Miss Smithman was asked to leave after being deemed disruptive. Her insistence on discussing the allocation of gift cards prompted the council to emphasize maintaining order and decorum during the meeting.
Additionally, discussions around traffic safety prompted updates from the deputy chief on potential speed limit reductions near Old Black Horse Pike and Taylor Avenue.
As the meeting concluded, several council members expressed gratitude towards the police for managing disruptions and emphasized the importance of mutual respect during council sessions. The council acknowledged the need for improved communication and suggested potential changes to meeting procedures to foster better dialogue between residents and officials.
