Revere Disabilities Commission Celebrates Grant Win for “All Abilities Day” at River Beach
- Meeting Overview:
The Revere Disabilities Commission meeting highlighted several initiatives aimed at enhancing inclusivity and representation for individuals with disabilities, including securing a $5,000 grant for “All Abilities Day” at River Beach. The meeting also featured a presentation by Christy Reynolds, founder of Humankind, a talent agency committed to inclusive imaging for people with disabilities, and discussions on the challenges and logistics of planning the upcoming beach event.
One of the most notable developments discussed was the successful application for increased funding for the “All Abilities Day” event at River Beach. The commission member responsible for the application shared the news about receiving the $5,000 grant, an increase from previous funding levels. This grant is intended to facilitate a day dedicated to inclusivity. Logistics were a critical focus, with ongoing discussions with Save the Harbor, Save the Bay about potential venue changes to guarantee the presence of lifeguards, a necessary safety measure. The deadline for the DCR permitting application was noted as April 24.
The meeting also featured Christy Reynolds, who presented her work with Humankind, a licensed talent and casting agency focused on representing children and adults with disabilities. Reynolds introduced the “Beauty Has No Limits” program, which provides professional photo clinics aimed at fostering self-expression and self-advocacy. These clinics have engaged a diverse community of individuals with disabilities, building a talent pool of over 75 people since April 2023. Reynolds shared a story about a young boy with autism who, after seeing his photos, expressed newfound confidence, highlighting the transformative impact of such initiatives. Members of the commission praised Reynolds’s efforts, recognizing the importance of enhancing visibility for individuals with disabilities in mainstream media.
Additionally, the commission discussed a fashion show initiative aimed at promoting individuals with disabilities. The participant involved with the Ark of the Southshore described their experience producing a fashion show for the organization’s anniversary, emphasizing the affordability of their clinics compared to typical industry costs.
Safety concerns at REA Beach were also addressed, with ongoing communication challenges reported with Representative Turko. Members expressed difficulty reaching the representative and navigating automated systems, prompting a decision to explore alternative channels, such as contacting a DCR liaison, to advocate for pedestrian safety improvements.
The logistics of the “All Abilities Day” event were further elaborated upon, with a proposed date of August 15 to avoid conflicts with other local events. Efforts to ensure the availability of necessary equipment and pre-approval of vendors were emphasized, alongside discussions about potential amenities, including a chess table and slush vendor. The need for a solar generator was also highlighted to streamline permitting processes.
While no resident concerns were raised, the commission reminded attendees of an upcoming public meeting on local road work and flood alerts.
