- Meeting Overview:
The Revere Human Rights Commission’s meeting on May 2nd centered on the adoption of Circle training aimed at conflict resolution and community engagement. The commission discussed the significance of the training sessions with Strong Oak, expressing anticipation for the new methods that could be learned for handling sensitive topics and fostering a more unified and inclusive community. The conversation delved into the potential of Circle practices for reconciliation and restorative justice, as well as the commission’s strategy to first undergo the training internally before introducing it to the public.
The Circle training, a method rooted in indigenous traditions, is designed to promote open dialogue, mutual understanding, and relationship-building within communities. Commissioners shared personal experiences with circle practices and the eagerness to deepen their knowledge of the history and application of such methods. The training is seen as a means to provide essential skills for engaging in difficult conversations, navigating tensions and conflicts, and bringing the commission’s team together to enhance their approach to community engagement.
The debate on whether to first implement the training among commissioners underscored the necessity to align the commission’s goals before opening the sessions to the broader community. Logistics, such as the venue and the possibility of holding a two-day training at the senior center, were discussed, along with the idea of creating a database of attendees who could serve as resources for future inquiries. The commission also considered the upcoming racial equity training and the potential of forming a network of resources among those who participate.
The meeting recognized the importance of acknowledging various events and cultural observances throughout the month of May, including Asian American and Pacific Islander Appreciation Month, International Firefighters Day, Cinco de Mayo, Mother’s Day, and more.
Plans for upcoming events were laid out, with a focus on engaging the community and honoring its diverse heritage. The commission mentioned a flag-raising ceremony scheduled for June 3rd, a Juneteenth flag-raising outside City Hall on June 18th, and the third annual Revere Beach Pride Celebration on June 23rd. A field trip to a cemetery to learn about the history of enslaved individuals buried there was also on the agenda, with plans to film the event and have a debrief at a local school. The commission discussed disseminating information about these events via the HRC website and Riviera TV, and the possibility of creating statements or videos to commemorate them.
Members discussed the appropriate channels for sharing information about cultural events, with suggestions ranging from website postings to avoiding mass emails. The importance of celebrating and acknowledging events representing minority communities was underscored, with examples such as South Asian and Greek holidays brought to the table.
In addition to event planning, the commission made announcements about Memorial Day events and plans for Pride Month.
