Revere License Commission Debates Noise and Community Impact of Koon Tiki Bar’s All-Alcohol License.
- Meeting Overview:
The Revere License Commission meeting included a discussion on the application for an all-alcohol restaurant license by Koon Tiki Bar, a new establishment aiming to set roots on Revere Beach Boulevard. The application, which sought approval for a substantial seating capacity and late-night operations, generated debate over potential noise issues and the establishment’s impact on the surrounding community.
John Carino, the manager of Koon Tiki Bar, presented the application detailing the proposed capacity of 115 indoor seats and 60 outdoor seats, with operating hours stretching until 2:00 a.m. daily. The entertainment offerings included cable TV, DJs, and live music, raising concerns from the commission about possible noise disturbances, given past complaints associated with previous businesses at the location. The commission urged Carino to ensure the business operated within community noise standards, highlighting the necessity of being considerate of nearby residents.
City Councilor Jim Mccurio expressed strong support for the bar, viewing it as a potential boon for Revere Beach by boosting local vibrancy and economic activity. However, he flagged parking and quiet zone restrictions as potential challenges, emphasizing the importance of informing patrons to prevent ticketing and towing issues. Mccurio reiterated the need for proactive noise control, particularly with new residences under construction nearby, urging the establishment to address these concerns before they escalated.
During the meeting, John, a representative for the restaurant, addressed these issues, revealing ongoing discussions with the Revere Police Department to ensure a police presence during peak times. He clarified that the venue aimed for a family-friendly atmosphere rather than a nightclub vibe, with quieter live performances to create a relaxed environment. Outdoor entertainment would be limited to daytime to minimize late-night disturbances.
A police lieutenant present at the meeting supported the notion of having police detail initially to manage crowd control, acknowledging the availability of law enforcement resources to maintain community safety. The lieutenant agreed that quieter performances could likely keep noise levels manageable, aligning with the commission’s emphasis on community peace.
The commission, balancing business opportunities and resident concerns, approved the application for Koon Tiki Bar, with the understanding that noise complaints and community impact would remain under scrutiny, and operational terms could be revisited if necessary.
Additionally, the meeting revisited the case of Takaria Okalipto 2 Corp, also known as Las Vegas restaurant, on Shirley Avenue. This establishment sought to restore its late-night operating hours following a period of compliance with public safety regulations. A representative asserted that previous issues had been resolved, and with a lack of recent disturbances, the commission approved the return to 2 a.m. closing hours.
In another matter, the commission addressed ongoing compliance issues with Atlantic Auto Body Inc. on Broadway. Due to unresolved problems with the Revere Fire Department, the commission decided to call in the business for an explanation of their plans.
The commission also tackled license renewals for various businesses, including the American Legion Post 61 and Revere Lodge 1171, which had their applications returned without action. The commission approved other renewals.
